5.0 out of 5 stars BUY THIS BOOK. IT IS THE BIBLE OF NYS CAMPING!!
This is truly a must have for anyone who camps in New York State. I am writing this review after purchasing my 4th copy. I have had 2 copies of my own, one of which a family member made off with, and I have bought 2 as gifts. It is the one thing we are never without from planning a trip to sitting at the campsite. This is truly a must have for anyone who camps in New York State. I am writing this review after purchasing my 4th copy. I have had 2 copies of my own, one of which a family member made off with, and I have bought 2 as gifts. It is the one thing we are never without from planning a trip to sitting at the campsite. We use the individual campground maps to choose our favorite sites and we use the tons of empty page space to make notes about the different campgrounds. We always have it in the car, even when we're not camping, so that if we ever pass a campground we can go through and make notes of some nice sites for planning future camping trips.

This is not a "wordy" book... it is simply maps and contact information for campsites - but the maps include all campsites, fishing, swimming, restrooms, etc etc. If you want a book that does some real chatting about the campgrounds or the region, this is NOT the book for you. However, if you want a book that clearly and accurately shows you the layout of any campground in the state before you blindly reserve a site, then buy this book.
I sit down, go to reserveamerica.com, open my Campgrounds of NY book - and choose the best site for my camping trip. The guesswork is gone, and I have had nothing but good luck if I trusted my book. I'm sure a lot of work went into putting this book together in such a clear and helpful way - and it paid off!

I love it!

I have never done a book review but this book got me going to the point of doing one.

I purchased this book by (and for) the title THE CAMPGROUNDS OF NEW YORK. I really wanted indepth information about campsgrounds in NY State. Sadly this isn't the resource I wanted/needed.

This is the book for you if you are looking for basic Dept of Environmental Conservation PR material all put together into one place. If that what you desire and you aren't into doing even a little web surfing, buy this book. Personally, I wanted a book that tells what it's like to visit the park(s) in question. Is it dog friendly? Is it good for hardcore campers is it better suited for families? What is the feel of the campground? Is it good for boating? If "yes" is it good for kayaking or big motorboats? (an example is Rollins Pond and Fish Creek are next door to each other but miles apart in terms of types of boating. Which is good for me? This book doesn't answer that question or and other ones). Do they have a staff that does activities with kids/families? Again, you don't get that with this book. All you get is DEC PR stuff coughed back at you. As I said, if that's what you want, go for it.

If you want better information and know how to do basic web surfing, go to the ReserveAmerica web site and the NY State DEC web site and you will gain as much if not more information than what is contained in this book. And you will save yourself $22 and a space on your bookshelf. But this book is in its 5th printing so someone must be buying it.

YMMV (your milage may vary)

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book!, February 20, 2012
This review is from: The Campgrounds of New York: A Guide to the State Parks and Public Campgrounds (Paperback)
I am the type of person that takes a long time to book a hotel room out of town and must read a ton of reviews before actually committing to where to stay. When it comes to camping I am the same, and it takes a long time for me to commit to where to camp. However, this series of books has completely taken that away and allowed me to read leisurely at what are the best campgrounds in the state for tent campers. If you are a tent camper and want some insight before committing to where to camp, this is definitely for you! I have found the material to be completely accurate.

Love the guide. Has all of the campgrounds that we have and would like to visit all in one book. Great when camping to checkoff the sites that are big enough for our fifth wheel camper.
