Book Description

May 10, 2001 Camping Europe: Includes Scandinavia, Central & Eastern
Written for those who dream of experiencing Europe but don't think they can afford it, this is the most comprehensive book on camping in Europe, detailing campgrounds from northern Norway to southern Crete. Camping Europe offers suggestions for advance planning (renting a car, how to bring a bike from home), meal preparation (with recipes), and finding a campsite (over 875 choices) both near major cities and in remote locations. Covering 21 countries, this lively, well-organized handbook includes solid advice on expense expectations, driving and navigating tips, and how to travel smart and safe. 250 detailed maps -- many new to this edition -- and an extensive index make this an invaluable travel aid.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

A professional chef who runs a bed-and-breakfast in Half Moon Bay, CA, Mickelsen has led a life that most people can only dream about. In this follow-up to her Camping Your Way Through Europe, she once again shares her secrets on how to get the most out of 21 countries in Europe, ranging from France to Slovenia, without spending a fortune. (Only about ten percent of the material in this book can be found in the previous book.) The way to go, she advises, is car camping, a travel method that involves renting a car, stocking it with some well-chosen supplies, practicing common sense for safety, and never ceasing to be amazed at what each country has to offer. Mickelsen doesn't hesitate to use adjectives such as exhilarating, magical, majestic, and exotic to describe her adventures. But these are not just filler words they provide a glimpse into the joy and passion that this enthusiastic traveler brings with her on her travels. Indeed, her love for exploring the unknown is infectious, and anyone who reads this book will be tempted to follow in her car tracks. Highly recommended for all public libraries. Joseph L. Carlson, Lompoc P.L., CA

1.0 out of 5 stars Too Much Territory Too Little Detail, August 25, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Camping Europe 2 Ed: Includes Scandinavia and Eastern Europe (Camping Europe: Includes Scandinavia, Central & Eastern) (Paperback)
This book is relatively worthless. Not only does it try to cover too much territory by doing all of Europe, it strays from it's intended purpose as a camping guide book. Most area descriptions are only a short paragraph long and have more info on area attractions than on the campgrounds (just check out all the activities listed in the index, unfortunately insufficient detail is provided for the activities as well). When I want info on area attractions I consult dedicated guide books such as Rick Steve's.

As such only 1 or 2 campgrounds per area are covered (typically w/ only 1-2 sentence descriptions) and no info as to the size, quality, costs and exact locations of the campgrounds. No attempt is made to distinguish or recommend certain campgrounds; nor is any particular area covered in enough detail to give you a range of campgrounds to choose from. I found more campground info through local tourist organizations and the internet than I found in this book.

We love to camp and think it's a great way for families to be together. I read about the book Camping Europe in a popular budget travel magazine. The campgrounds sounded so inviting that we thought we'd at least try it once. We had a great trip! We chose The Netherlands and Denmark because many of the campgrounds listed rented bikes and we like to cycle together as a family. We rented a car and took our tent like the book suggested. It made the trip very inexpensive compared to other ways of traveling. Our son loved playing with the other kids at the campground's play and swim areas. We enjoyed meeting other parents and relaxing with them. We found the things recommended in the book to do interesting and fun, particularly since there were driving directions on how to get to them. Campground lists usually just give an address. The book gave detailed directions on how to drive to them. We would have had a hard time finding them without the book. I highly recommend the book and camping as a wonderful way to enjoy Europe.
