This review is from: Jane Campion (Pocket Essential series) (Paperback)
I suppose when someone writes a somewhat biographical book, it's not essential to like the person you're writing about but it helps. I'm not sure why Ellen Cheshire chose to write this book because she apparently dislikes the bulk of Jane Campion's work. As far as the biographical information and story-line explanations for Janes' work, this book does quite well; however, at the end of each film section the author gives her opinion of Jane's work and most of the time, it's negative. If this book had left out "The Verdict" section after each work, it probably would have been best. I'm not sure why she chose Jane as her subject to write about but if you're looking for a book to properly critique Jane's work, I'd look at the more scholarly work of Kathleen McHugh in the Contemporary Film Directors Series or Dana Polan's book in the World Directors Series and pass on this one. This particular book is all of 96 pages and I'm uncertain who would benefit from reading it.
