Another GREAT pairing of albums of Erroll Garner's magical, gravity-defying pianistics. Campus Concert features very special can't-keep-the-foot-still swing played in Garner's inimitable style and shines with moments of deep, colossol beauty during My Funny Valentine and Stardust. The Indiana college audience is held spellbound throughout and bursts appropriately forth into the loudest, most passionate applause you've ever heard at the close of the show. Seeing is Believing was Erroll's first recording of the 70's and flies dizzyingly and joyously through classics like For Once in My Life (who else can you think of that plays music so outrageously swinging and stunningly, upliftingly HAPPY) and Spinning Wheel, and glows gorgeously on beauties like The Loving Touch. Simply amazing music from one of the truly greatest talents in all of music.

Garner in excellent toe tapping form. This is actually a compilation of two different albums, Campus Concert was recorded live and Feeling Is Believing was recorded on a different date in the studio. I consider Feeling Is Believing to be one of Garner's finest albums ever and do not think it suffers in any way from the tunes being pop hits from the 60's rather than pop hits form the previous decades. Garner's make these tune so compelling, his versions are among the most grooving renditions I have ever heard of these famous tunes, simply marvelous!

Format: Audio CD
The first eight tracks are from a March 13, 1962 live concert at Indianan's Purdue University. According to some sources there were over six thousand students at the concert. Regardless of how many attended, each track is packed with energy as the sound tracks attest. In fact, as you run through the sound tracks you are going to hear two very different albums - one with a driving trio performing live and all of the energy that entails, and the other album starting at track 9 a richer sound that is not better or worse, but certainly different.

On the tracks comprising the Purdue concert Erroll is backed by Eddie Calhoun on bass and Kelly Martin on drums. On the remaining tracks span August through December 1969 in three different sessions - one in Chicago and the last two in NYC. The personnel differs, but the main feature of this album is unlike the standards Erroll played for the college crowd on the Purdue concert tracks, these are pop tunes that were very popular when the recordings were made. The fact that Spinning Wheel by Blood, Sweat and Tears is included shows that Erroll himself was not standing still. Perhaps he saw how Ramsey Lewis - a popular jazz pianist who turned to pop - was making a lot of money without compromising his art. As you listen to the samples for these tracks you will clearly hear popular tunes, but there are no compromises made. If anything Erroll brings a deeper jazz sensibility to these than he did to the standards on the first eight tracks.

Here are the locations, dates and personnel for the Feeling is Believing portion of this set:

Track 17, You turned Me Around, was recorded in Universal Studios in Chicago on August 7, 1969.

One of Jazz's greatest pianists ever is self-taught Pittsburghian Erroll Garner. An orchestra in himself, he can't stop swinging, and you will too!
