Book Description

November 1, 1999
More than 50 percent of black children are being raised by single mothers. This book examines the future of black boys in the hands of African American mothers, showing 27 mothers who are raising their male children successfully. Some of the issues addressed are manhood, masculinity, media, music, peer pressure, academic achievement, the lack of fathers, and goal setting. This book hopes to change the way society views, engages, and treats single-mother families and serves as a reference for mothers looking for help in raising sons.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Missing Puzzel Piece of African American Parenting, September 7, 2002
This review is from: Can Black Mothers Raise Our Sons? (Paperback)
Dr. Lawson Bush, V has contributed a scholarly masterpiece to the African American parenting genre.

Anyone interested in a definitive answer to the question of whether African American Mothers are capable of raising African American Sons, must read his novel.

Dr. Bush, V provides readers with an historic and contextual analysis about: definitions of masculinity, gender acculturation, European (mainstream American) family constructs, and African family constructs.

By surveying mothers and their sons, Dr. Bush, V has gleened (best practies) and in turn, discovered sound (parenting strategies).

He ends his novel with a cliff-hanger - - What is that unique and unspoken "it" that most African American males and females believe African American Mothers are not equipped with, to convey to their African American Sons, in order to make them into men?
