The Mellow Herd,
By andrew brockington (vicksburg, mi United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: I Can Dancing and Walking (Audio CD)
I stumbled across THINGS IN HERDS one afternoon lastyear browsing through MP3.com. From their sample downloads I quickly became a fan, and when I visited London last I made it my job to find their album. I CAN DANCING AND WALKING did not let me down. On my first listening of the album, the soft mellow tones of HERDS' vocals and guitar picking reminded me that of Nick Drake. Much of the album remains very minimal in sound, often containing much more than vocals over a guitar. However, it is in this blend of few instruments and voice that an uncanny fullness of sound is reached. The album plays from mellow songs to up tempo mellow songs. It's a great album to ride on a train with. Or let alone take much anywhere. I highly recomend I CAN DANCING AND WALKING. And if you ever have a chance to see HERDS perform live, do that too.

As the story goes, Pete Lush happened upon an 8-track and decided to translate his anomalous thoughts into a somewhat palatable musical format. What was born from such a peculiar thought process was a record that is heavily weighted down by mood, deepened emotions and delicate acoustical arrangements compressed with random sounds. As genuine as the music is, it does tend to be on the sullen side with rare moments of anything resembling an upbeat moment. Vocally, Pete utilized his breathless, super luxuriant vocals that switch back and forth from the conversational to the sublime. This one had rainy day soundtrack written all over it but may be best listened to when you are in the mood for introspective thought. It also won't be one for high volume either but it's vibe is open for interpretation. Think of it as an extension of ones creative ability to transfuse their eclectic thoughts into music that seems abstract on the surface but doesn't confuse the listener.

Pete Lush is one of the most exceptional musicians i've heard. He is underappreciated, everything i own of his is phenominal. in addition to i can dancing and walking, if you can find the red horse rides, or pardon?, they will definately make you appreciate what an incredible songwriter he is. you really cant find true acoustic artists anymore like things in herds. But the most important thing of all to remember is
