A Must Read,
This review is from: I Can Do This: Living with Cancer, Tracing a Year of Hope (Paperback)
Anyone battling a serious illness must read 'I Can Do This' for the inspiring prose and poetry Beverlye Hyman Fead offers. A unique account of how when the going got tough, this woman got going, doing everything she could to win the fight against a terminal diagnosis. Armored by family and friends, Ms. Fead rolled the dice and opted for a medical treatment many would shy away from. So far so good. In the pages of 'I Can Do This' she takes inventory of her life and makes changes where changes need to be made. I gave this book to my brother, also battling a terminal diagnosis. He feels less alone in his determination to beat the odds. If Beverlye Hyman Fead can do this, maybe he can, too.

I Can Do This,

This review is from: I Can Do This: Living with Cancer, Tracing a Year of Hope (Paperback)
My sister who lives in California, was very concerned about my health and well-being as I was just diagnosed with colon cancer, and liver mets. She mentioned that she was sending a book for me to read that was titled, "I Can Do This." She felt that the book would be helpful for me in understanding that there is hope in dealing with this overwhelming task and it was. I just started mt chemo, stage four with four very tumors in the liver: two in size 11 cm by 11 cm: and two in size 13 cm by 13 cm. I had a rough year in 2008. In April I was given a clean bill of health. In July, I went to the hospital with appendicitis and discovered cancer in the appendix and colon, which they removed, however there was a very large abdominal mass 25 cm by 25 cm, which was unknown. The next step was a number of tests, inconclusive, and then had the mass removed. That was oct. 2008, and another major surgery (benign tumor) however, I needed time to recover. Around Thanksgiving I stated having right abdoninal pains and the doctors thought it was possibility the gallbladder. In December, I leared that I had four large masses in the liver, and it was inoperable state four. I was in a state of shock, and I can't try to tell you where I was in this point in time. After more tests I started chemo in Jan. 2009. I spent days on end reading as many Internet sites as I could find, too many to count, I was geting things mixed up in my mind and confused. "I Can Do This" I'l never forget the day my copy of "I Can Do This" came in the mail. First, i just put it on my kitchen table with the rest of the mail; I was in the middle of my first chemo session and not feeling well! Later that night I picked up the book and read the back cover consisting of four reviews. I thought,"Well that sounds nice," and laid the book back down. " I Can Do This" I retired early that night and tossed and turned for a few hours in between prayers and different thoughts. I got up for a drink of water and I could not stop looking at that book. " I Can Do This" I started reading at about 2 A.M.and right from the beginning, this little book started answering questions that I had ever since being with the battle of my life. I found myself reading this book, not only as a reader, but I was seeing and feeling many aspects of the book, as if I was there. It helped me find many answers that I had within myself about my cancer. Beverlye takes the reader through her personal journey about living with cancer. I felt like she was my friend sharing her story with me. Her artwork and portry creates a special inspirational feeling within the book. "I Can Do This" I went to sleep about 4 A.M. and it seemed like the first good sleep I had for a long time. I have read this four more time, and each time I see something new. Plus, each time I pick up the book and read any part of it, I feel relief and very peaceful with my life and myself. This book gives the reader hope and peace. " I Can Do This" Since my cancer was discovered I,ve read many books, including different writings about cancer, treatments, help and support. This book may be short in pages, but its contents are so touching, inspirational, hopeful, and moving. I tell my friends who are dealing with the battle of their lives, in living with cancer, about this wounderful writing and hope they can achieve the level of inspirational satistaction as I did from " I Can Do This". I want to thank Beverlye for this book of hope as it has changed my outlook on CANCER and LIFE. Thank You So Nuch "I Can Do This" Nicholas D.Datish

mildly dissapointed,

This review is from: I Can Do This: Living with Cancer, Tracing a Year of Hope (Paperback)
I was just hoping for more narrative of her experience. It was more poetry that I was hoping for and that is just not my style/preference. I thought it was priced a little high for how short the book is.

This book is amazing. I read it twice in one sitting. The author tells her incredible life journey and recent story - being given two months to live and now living many years beyond that. THe book gives hope and meaning and depth and authenticity to the reader. Poetry and paintings fill the book. I feel that I know this amazing women - a very real woman - deep and honest and authentic. Several poems will be recited by me and given as presents - one about divorce - finding ourselves - a seventieth birthday poem that is joyous and optimistic and wise - all at the same time - and her conclusion and perspective on life. I've already been giving the book as a gift - and will always have one for myself. Funny - that this is a gem - an undiscovered book. I only know of it due to going to a fundraiser for The Cancer Support Community. Beverly spoke there. She was so gracious - I had to have the book. It was happenstance and serendipity - which defines a lot of life. BUY THIS GEM NOW.
