Hot Tuna - 'Steady As She Goes'

Biography

From their days playing together as teenagers to their current acoustic and electric blues, probably no one has more consistently led American music for the last 50 years than Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady, the founders and continuing core members of the iconic blues-roots band Hot Tuna.

Now members of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the pair began playing together while growing up in the Washington… Read more in Amazon's Hot Tuna Store

This review is from: In a Can (Audio CD)
This limited release was brought forth in 1996. It is a round metal tin that contains five Hot Tuna CD's, a 40 page booklet and it is kept safe inside a cardboard container.

As there are more Tuna records to chose from, this set is focused on the early records and it is great to see them all in one place. The very first Tuna album: "Hot Tuna'" is included here in it's expanded version. The very hard to find, second Tuna record: "First Pull Up, Then Pull Down" is also a part of this set. The very popular Tuna favorite: "Burgers" is here, as is: "America's Choice" & "Hoppkorv".

Fans of Jorma & Jack, already know this but for anyone who has stumbled into here and didn't know, Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady started this band as an outlet to play old-timey blues in an acoustic format, away from their band: The Jefferson Airplane. This happened in 1969, and the showcase for what they were doing is on: "Hot Tuna". This record set the standard for the music of the Band as a bluesy/folky group of mighty players, and it contains a bunch of their best known songs.

Album number two is: "First Pull Up, Then Pull Down", it is also from a live source {A Biker Bar} But, now Tuna had become very much an electric group, and this one features the talents of fiddler, Papa John Creach. It is loose and crazy and it contains some amazing playing by Jorma and Papa John. It was then and still is my personal favorite Hot Tuna record from The 1970's. Third album: "Burgers" was the first studio, Hot Tuna release, and it was very popular as it contains the Song: "Keep On Truckin". "Burgers" is a good mix of electric and acoustic Tuna tunes and it was {for me} the very best of the Hot Tuna works from a recording studio. With great numbers such as: "True Religion", "Highway Song" and "Water Song", this one finds the band as close to the radio as they would ever get, it's another great one for the group.

For the 4th and 5th records, Hot Tuna entered their "Metal Years" as a heavy electric blues trio {guitar, bass & drums} and the band had big success on the stages of the world and TV, as they were featured on: "In Concert" & "The Midnite Special". I would rather see: "Yellow Fever" in place of "Hoppkorv", but that is a minor gripe as: "Hoppkoff" does contain the great songs: "Watch the North Wind Rise" and "Santa Claus Retreat".

The reason that this set didn't sell more copies upon it's release was that the loyal fans of the band, already had these CD's as a part of their music libraries. But, for me this is a very cool way to replace my old Hot Tuna LP's from the 70's.

The booklet is a very good source of information about Tuna and these classic records. This is still good Tuna value, for your purchasing dollar. This is a very well produced musical documentary of the early works of a great American band, Hot Tuna

5.0 out of 5 stars The missing piece., June 17, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: In a Can (Audio CD)
This "Tuna in a can" makes for a great little collector's item. It contains five of their initial seven releases:Hot Tuna, First Pull Up Then Pull Down, Burgers, America's Choice and Hopkorv. Unfortunately, it does not contain Phospherescent Rat whose I See The Light is a Tuna highlight. A strange ommission. Yellow Fever is also absent but that was not as essential. Otherwise, the material is brilliantly re-mastered and the booklet does a respectable job of covering the band's history and credits. Worth getting...Simon.
