5.0 out of 5 stars CLASSIC
This album is truly underated and misunderstood i cant tell you how many people have knocked it and dissed it since its release in 1998. Canibus is a truly talented MC and out of all of his albums this one is probably my favorite. If any man could save hiphop from its sorry state than that man is Canibus also be sure to check out Mic club and Rip the Jacker 5 Mics all...

2.0 out of 5 stars Wack lackluster production=a waste of a skilled lyricist.
Before the release of his debut, canibus co-starred on common's and ll cool j album out shinining them both by far. Canibus became the new buzz of the underground with his unmatched battle style raps. I had alot of hopes for his album just before i copped it. I give canibus himself 5 stars, but wyclef's lack luster flavorless production killed the whole album...

This review is from: Can-I-Bus (Audio CD)
Unfortunately this CD was released when there was an extreme thirst for dancehall/commercial rap(Puffy looped beats/RuffRyder Jingles). Even though I'm an underground fan, I was dissapointed at first because the oldschool/mellow beats totally DID NOT match with Canibus' wicked style(although now I love this CD from concentrating on the LYRICS). As Canibus said himself when he apologized to his fans "It wasn't my fault, Wyclef spoiled it!" I've bought mostly all of Canibus freestyles and tracks. And I've heard some tracks from the upcoming album. Let me tell you...These beats are some of the best I've ever heard. I heard a song where Canibus is ryhming A'capella(?) for a minute, then the beat comes in slowly and builds itself up around HIM. Thats real hip-hop. Not when rappers create jingles that sound exactly like the beats they are given. I try hard to be a hiphop purist, and with his upcoming CD, it will be a lot easier to remain faithful! Buy this album and the upcoming one if you want to know what this music is really about.

With primo, rza and some underground producers on the beats the results on can-i-bus would been a ground breaking debut.

5.0 out of 5 stars It ain't about beats. Canibus is truly the illest right now, April 11, 2000

To all of the people talking about his beats, is that all?Hell, I love rap and hip-hop just as much as you do, but I canactually look past a beat and listen to the rhymes. In this department, Canibus delivers, and shows why he has a right to hold a mic. With lines like, "I grab mics and push niggaz to the left so hard their hearts end up on the right sides of they chest", how can you claim that Cani has no rhymes? Hell, people be calling DMX the resurrected Tupac, so why do people then try and dis Canibus? If you listen to the album you'll find every single line he spits is at least three times as good as most commercial songs as a whole. Give the album a chance and listen to the lyrics and not the beat. He's one of the greatest, his time will come.

3.0 out of 5 stars Can-I-Bus? Yes, but..., June 19, 2002
This review is from: Can-I-Bus (Audio CD)
This was one of the most anticipated debuts in awhile as Canibus had a career's worth of dope verses on mixtapes and guest appearances. So could Canibus translate his "underground" success into a full length album?
No. The first question to the hip-hop fan is why would Canibus choose to sign with Wyclef of everyone? This seems to be the biggest problem of this entire album. Wyclef and his Fugee's connections (as talented as they are) are not the same type of music that Canibus makes. Wyclef's beats and some of the directions he takes this album in are more appropriate for himself, rather than the lyrical monster Canibus and his battle rhymes. Wyclef's best contribution to this album is the song "Second Round K.O." as Canibus lyrically gives it to LL Cool J. "I Honor You" is a great song and is underrated as Canibus expands his lyrical horizons, but still feels forced.
The album really gets going on the tracks "How We Roll" and "Channel Zero" as they are produced by DJ Clark Kent and Canibus rips these quality beats to shreds. The latter (Channel Zero) is a highlight of the album as Canibus mixes his lyrics with his intelligent way of thinking and creates a song full of government conspiracies. The song "Rip Rock" is a cross between rock and rap and was worth the chance taken because it could've been good, but again misses its mark as Canibus seems uncomfortable on this song.
The song that best captures this album is "Buckingham Palace" as Canibus raps over a very simplistic beat and spits venomous lyrics that will show everyone that he is a top lyricist. Canibus has said multiple times that he believes beats don't matter and lyrics is all that he's concerned about. That's what this album is. It's weak from a production standpoint, but lyrically as strong as any album out. With lyrics like his I was hoping DJ Premier would be brought in to give Canibus some tracks that could match his lyrical tenacity.
Fans concerned with lyrical content first will probably have no problems with this album and will be rewinding it over and over to catch all his clever rhymes. But fans wanting more than just rhymes, or a balanced album should listen to some of it before spending your money.

3.0 out of 5 stars "99 Percent of Your Fans Wear High Heels", May 24, 2006
This review is from: Can-I-Bus (Audio CD)
Can I Bus

This dude was one of the most hyped emcees ever, and with good reason. After dropping some incredible guest appearances with the Lost Boyz and The Firm, many people believed that Canibus was sure to blow up. This dude was the epitome of a battle rapper.

This cd has its' highs and lows. I'll start with the highs.

2nd Round KO is the ILLEST dis track I've ever heard. To this day I can't understand how anyone could think that LL won that battle. True, the ripper strikes back was also a good dis track, but 2nd Round KO is on another level. The line:

"You're mad at me cause I kick that ish real N***as feel, (with amazon.com edits)
While 99 percent of your fans wear high heels"

is one of the best battle punchlines I've ever heard and it is still relevant to LL's career in 2006. Buckingham Palace is another dope braggadocio track full of amazing punchlines and metaphors. These two tracks alone make this cd worth buying. Patriots and Get Retarded are also good tracks as well. What's Going On-a song centered on violence in hip-hop, is also well done.

However, this cd definitely has its' flaws.
1) As previously mentioned the majority of the production on this cd is pretty weak.
2) Canibus is another victim of the "curse of the battle rapper" in a sense that he can write battle tracks all day, but he struggles with conceptual songs. Certain tracks on this cd don't work at all.

While it doesn't live up to the hype, Can I Bus is overall a decent cd. There are some flashes of greatness on here. It is disappointing though in the sense that dude had so much potential, and he never really lived up to it. I wish he would have stuck to the battle/braggadocio tracks and got better production.

2.0 out of 5 stars 1998's Most Disappointing Album, September 14, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Can-I-Bus (Audio CD)
It was obvious from the start that Canibus' debut album would not live up to its Godzilla sized hype. There are a few nice cuts like 'Patriots', 'Whats Goin On', and 'Buckingham Palace', but most of the songs fail to impress. The most glaring problem with the album is the lack of big name productions. Wyclef and company's beats are way too mellow for Canibus' rough'ish voice. Also, many of the cuts have been heard elsewhere on mixtapes or on 'UNI-vs-All'..

Yes , I gave this CD a 5 have so listen why. The CD is the very first album that Canibis put out. This alone makes its a standout seeing how hyped he was more or less than 50 cent was in 2002. Unlike 50 this album has alot of Lyrical skill and talent. Yes some of the production was lame and some beats are wack , but for 1998 this album is on a level reached by few , especailly as a debut album. So this is a star-effort despite a few flaws.

5.0 out of 5 stars Til the Meter says, 9, 9, 9, 9. This is a 10~!!, July 16, 2001

Yo. Canibus is one of the hottest out. I do agree with one thing yall said and that's that Canibus is an excellent lyricist. His lyrics helped some of the production and made it sound hott. But the one thing I disagree wit everybody on, is that Second Round KO is the hottst song on the album. To me, "Patriot" was the hottest on it. Him and Free definently ripped it. "How We Roll" was anotha tight track. The production wasn't all that bad. Although there was some beats that I didn't really care for like "I Honor U", and "Channel Zero". Channel Zero was cool and all, but I just didn't care for it. But the song I like the most was "Get Retarded". The beat fit his style well, and Canibus ripped it as usual, and it also had a good chorus to it (9 outta 10 of these rap artist is garbage. I'm 10 so I'm not garbage/lol) "Rip Rock" was my fav. when I first heard it cause of the guitars and stuff and I was younger. But now, It's still cool. the rest of the tracks on the album is worth listneing to. Even though this album already came out a while, while ago I still say to all those who never heard the album or just heard about it and you heard it wasn't that good. DON'T LISTEN TO THEM!! THEY LYING TO YOU!! Pick it up. This right here is a "MUST GET~!! "" Get it NOW~!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Excellent lyricist....but produced poorly..., December 8, 2000
This review is from: Can-I-Bus (Audio CD)
Canibus is an excellent lyricist thats really impressive with his battle thyming ability, personally I belief he's better than Eminem...but this cd is not really that great...

First off there are very noticable flaws on this cd...

#1 - any rap fan'll notice that Canibus is a battle lyricist that'll scare the crap outta you, but your not supposted to hear battle rhyming lyrics with a laid back groovy beat--"WYCLEF MISTAKE"--- so the mix between the words and music doesn't go together...

#2 - having WYCLEF produce a cd is a flaw itself...

The tracks I liked on this cd were... "Patriots" , "Get Retarded" (crappy hook though) , "2nd Round KO" , "Hypenitis" (good lyrics--chorus sucks and is too frequent) , "I Honor U" , "Channel Zero" (has good lyrics but the beat and hook suck) , and "Buckingham Palace" are all excellent Canibus tracks....

Some tracks that really sucked miserably on this cd were "What's Goin' On" , "Niggamentary" , track 11 (forgot the name) , and Rip Rock (that track is one of the worst and most pathetic tracks i've ever heard...and that took me 25 seconds to realize when I started the track)

B.C. 2000 is really good check that out...
