5.0 out of 5 stars Make up your mind and get this CD
I just received it today from Amazon (via another store at a cheap price) and wow, am I pleased with it. "Change My Mind" is one of my favorite all-time songs, but all the other songs hold up, too.

Excellent stuff and what a voice. Mr. Davis is sadly very ill right now, but you can still listen to the legendary voice here. Truly a highly underrated singer on...

2.0 out of 5 stars THIS RELEASE IS TAKEN FROM THE VINYL LP
A great lost classic for sure, but does anyone who bought this, realise that this is transfered & cleaned up (a little) from an LP? Alot of "Ticks" & some "Pops", are clearly noticable throughout the CD. The giveaway is the begining of Track 7. (Open The Door To Your Heart) A big scratch going round & round at the head of the tune. It doesn't state anywhere in the...

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Can I Change My Mind (Audio CD)

Excellent stuff and what a voice. Mr. Davis is sadly very ill right now, but you can still listen to the legendary voice here. Truly a highly underrated singer on the national scene.

This CD also is a good reason why to opt away from the many greatest hits packages. I was leaning towards getting a greatest hits, but decided to get this and was very pleased. A lot of hidden gems on this CD.

4.0 out of 5 stars Underrated Soul Singer Changes Minds & Hearts on Reissue, October 28, 2000
This review is from: Can I Change My Mind (Audio CD)
On the original Dakar liner notes from this welcome CD reissue, writer Bob Rolontz quotes Tyrone Davis as saying, "I wanted to sing like myself, not like Wilson Pickett, or Little Milton, or Bobby Blue Bland." Rolontz further states that "From that point on, Davis struggled to find himself, to sing songs that fitted him, not anyone else."

On "Can I Change My Mind," again on Chicago's revived, revered Brunswick label, Davis in a way asks the title question of his fans. Here he sings songs associated with Memphis soul's finest: Eddie Floyd ("Knock On Wood" as slow, soulful ballad and "Just The One I've Been Looking For" as Memphis-meets-Chicago steamer), Clarence Carter (a faithful "Slip Away") Sam Cooke ("Good Times") and, yes, Bobby Bland (a fine "Call On Me.") Arrangers Don Myrick and Willie Henderson successfully merge Bland's urban, big-band blues with Chess Records' bomastic, chart-dominating soul (especially on the LP's two closing ballads).

Then there's "Can I Change My Mind," the LP's masterpiece and biggest hit. The song rests on a guitar/bass bottom warm and tightly coiled as a new, hard mattress. Over this bouncy guitar funk, Davis cooly, convincingly sings a lyric story (man leaves woman, waits for her to beg for his return, is concerned and regretful when she doesn't) which, had the song been released 10 years later, might have answered the disco anthem, "I Will Survive."

Fans of 60s R&B will enjoy this highly recommended reissue; here's hoping Brunswick releases more gems (Lost Generation, Barbara Acklin, Jackie Wilson) from its vaults and gives underrated soul survivors like Tyrone Davis their due acclaim.

Shame on you Brunswick Kats!
