Product Description

With dynamic growth in China and India, recovery in Europe and Japan, and notable gains in U.S. productivity, the question arises: Can Latin America compete? Many argue that macroeconomic and trade reforms achieved in the 1990s merely put a handsome coat of paint over education, labor, judicial, and administrative reforms that remain incomplete. This book identifies and analyzes ten factors that most influence the competitiveness of Latin American nations and will shape their economic futures. In their frank and direct assessment--pulling no punches--the authors also present viable courses of action that Latin America can take to increase its ability to compete in the global economy

4.0 out of 5 stars Crisp, lucid, fact-filled reading, May 14, 2008
By John A. Holcombe (Miami, Florida) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
In the tradition of De Soto, Price and Haar's intro sets the pace while expertly written chapters take a clear-eyed look at Latam's failings. This compact volume deftly lays out the key areas where the region's elected leaders can choose responsibility over victimhood and make large impacts with what often amount to innovative, low-cost policy changes (although certainly the cost of massive infrastructure improvements needed in the region are staggering). Their warning - that what is needed is productivity gains through creativity and innovation - is fresh in light of recent commodity booms, fat public sector budgets, and populist regimes who look to co-opt their constiuents with the illusion of improved living standards.

If the next President of the USA read this book, they would not be talking about building walls or blaming NAFTA for job losses in the Rust Belt - what nonsense after you read how Mexico and others have been losing jobs in the face of globalization. The next President should be working to solve these challenges to make our hemisphere more competitive than the rest of the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful, Relevant and Timely, May 12, 2008
This work provides a comprehensive examination of the region's competitive environment. John Price and Jerry Haar's prescient introduction probes the confluence of challenges that these societies will face in the coming years. As editors, they have wisely compiled contributions from twenty-one renowned experts who examine quantitative data and evaluate political, institutional and economic forces that shape Latin America at present. This selection of researched essays provides a thorough analytical review of the processes that will be required for successful competition.

Can Latin America Compete? is invaluable for anyone doing business in Latin America today, and it is indispensible reading for those engaged in research, study and policy making. John Price and Jerry Haar and their contributors, possess a unique and valuable knowledge and exceptional perspective. This reader is satisfied to conclude, as they do, that Latin America is an immense territory of possibilities to be discovered.

5.0 out of 5 stars Recommended for LatAm Libraries, May 12, 2008
This is a great book for anyone seeking a lucid perspective of the challenges faced by Latin America in its ongoing quest for capital, technology and a better life for its people. Although Latin America is a vast region, the book addresses the principle drivers of economic growth that must be addressed if the region is to overcome its dependency on boom-and-bust commodities. I particularly enjoyed the authors' comparison of diverse nations as a way of developing general observations about the region as a whole. For those who know little about the deep impact of globalization on Latin America's development, this is a great place to start. For those who have read widely, this is an invaluable summary and an essential addition to their Latin American libraries.
