Book Description

August 18, 2010
I CAN ONLY GIVE YOU EVERYTHING was recently named winner in the general fiction category of the 2011 Next Generation Indie Book Wards and received a silver medal in the 2011 Independent Publisher Book Awards (IPPY's)
In order to cope with the death of her mother, nine year old Chloe Taggart builds the Mommy Machine, a soft sculpture constructed of materials infused with loss and memory. It is a piece so evocative of the actual woman that it soon finds national prominence among the elite of the contemporary art world. But even though Chloe’s father, Brian, has decided to forgo a tradition time of mourning with his daughter they are still not prepared for the incredible journey Chloe’s art provides them. It is a story about the nature of fame, the ever shifting criteria for fine art but mostly about how a father and daughter learn to live and love again redefining themselves not only to one another but to themselves as well. It is a book that in the words of one reader confirms that “life, art, love and loss are always so much bigger than we are.”

A TERRIFIC READ! August 22, 2010
A sensitive, emotional portrait of father and child told in beautifully vivid prose. I found myself rereading sentences to get to all the layers - a truly synesthetic experience. The central relationship moves between affable and bittersweet as Brian and Chloe navigate society's expectations, family relations, and the art world while trying to deal with a devastating loss. The insights into the artistic process and exhibitions were interesting, especially seeing how the expectations of the jaded, protective father traversed with the freshness of the daughter. The story is unusual and involving. It is one of those rare treats you will find yourself unable to put down.

I read this novel in manuscript form, and was so excited about Tatum's voice that I had to call him and tell him what a wonderful story he created.

The relationship between father and daughter is poignant and natural, and the dialogue rings true. Chloe, the daughter, is an adult one minute, and a child the next - if you have children, you'll see your own child's words of wisdom in Chloe's words.

Yes, it's a story about how a father and child cope with death, but it's a story full of hope and charm.

You'll roll Tatum's words around in your mouth, savoring them again and again. This is a writer of true talent, the kind who stands out from the crowd. I really do see a Pulitzer in his future.
