I love the Read It! Books. After my older girls learned their sounds & read through the "Bob Books", we moved on to these books. I feel like they are the bridge between "Bob Books" & easy chapter books. I lost my first set so I found them again on Amazon for my last child who is now learning to read.

I am reading these books with my 6 year old girl as part of the Sonlight LA 1rst grade curriculum, and we both do not like them. There are so many rhyming words like Pat the Rat, and Mat the Cat and they sat on the hat etc. etc. etc. that the stories don't even make sense. The stories are just plain hard to follow; they also use language that is unfamiliar to the children. So while the child might be able to sound out the words to each story easily, they are not able to understand what they have read, because what they have read is gibberish. There are far better learn to read books out there. Some of the stories are better than others, but I would still not rate any of them more than three stars out of five. Very disappointing.

Kids like it and want to read it, but they stories are choppy and incoherent. I would not recommend it.

The books the school sent home for my son to read were impossible for him. I pulled him out of school and tried to him in a varity of ways. He finally can make it through a story on his own. Id recommend these and dr suess's books for kids having trouble reading.

Working through this book with my 6 year old. He's enjoying the stories and making progress. The stories make him laugh and he likes to make comments on what he's reading. This may not interest everyone but my son seams to enjoy it. He reads a short story a day, 5 days a week, then we write out any new sight words listed at the bottom of the page. Great program for kids who know their letter sounds. I appreciate that the stories are written in a way that you have to read the words not just memorize or guess at what the words are. He likes that there is a certificate in the back that he can work towards getting when he's read all of it and he looks forward to being able to read book 2 and book 3.

At first I didn't understand that to use these books, you need to treat them like a phonics drill and first read the words from the Word List Book and then read the chapter that has those sounds and words in it. Then the weird tongue twisty rhyming nature of the books bothered me. But then I realized that the nonsensical nautre of the stories was forcing him to rely on phonics to read them. And once we started using the Word Book, his reading abilities shot up. So smart to have a phonics book that is directly linked to a reader. Now it's the easiest book for him to read and he loves the stories.

I've used all three books of this series to help teach my kindergartner to read. In some curriculums, it is used starting at first grade. If your child can sound out words fairly comfortably, they may be able to start these. At the bottom of each story, the book introduces the new sight words that will be found in the story. The stories are actually pretty decent for beginning readers and makes my son laugh at times.
