I would only get this if you have never read music before. I would probably get a different book becuase this one is overly basic. I am just getting back into playing my viola after a long break and I wanted a book to help me remember, but this was not it. I have used other music theory books that were better than this one.

The book separates progressive lessons on recognizing pitches from lessons on recognizing rhythm. This makes the book superior to most sight reading books. Almost everyone learning to sight read music will have different rates of progress reading rhythm than reading pitch. In most books, the student's progress will be held back in one area on a lesson due to difficulty with another area.
this is especially important with the viola because for a lot of people it is a second instrument, so the student already has a grasp of reading rhythm, but is completely clueless of the viola clef.

It does seem that this book was written for viola, not just transposed from a violin lesson book. I do not completely agree with the focus on the upper strings at first, though that seems to be a traditional approach to the viola and 'cello. One advantage of this approach is that it allows the beginner on alto clef to think of the upper half as lower lines and ledger lines of the treble clef or ledger lines of the bass clef, an approach that is much better than trying to rote memorize the notes of the lines and spaces. But for the beginning violist who has not already learned to read for another instrument, it is unrealistically limiting.

Great book. Has been extremely helpful for me, my kids, and my students. The progressive nature makes it very easy to learn to read music and helps the student succeed. Starts with the most used strings/notes and gradually adds more and more to make it more difficult. There is a Pitch page followed by a Rhythm page which allows the students to focus on both.
Highly recommend!

Good book! Good size font, easy to read. This is a great introductory note reading book for viola students. I like how it is spiral bound making it easy to flip through lessons.

Works great for my up and coming 8 year old violist. Spiral bound and sits without bending on a music stand.
