Book Description

September 1, 2002
During his lifetime, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson of blessed memory, was a highly successful religious leader. His brilliant scholarship and eloquent speaking touched hundreds of thousands of people. Larger than life and presiding in a post-Holocaust world during which Jews returned to the land of Israel in an unprecedented fashion, he was declared by many of his followers to be the Moshiach (Messiah) for whom Jews have waited for thousands of years. His death in 1994 should have dashed those hopes. However, many of his followers have advanced the position that even today the Rebbe can still be Moshiach. This book is an analysis of this position within the Jewish tradition. What do the doctrinally binding texts say about a dead man being Moshiach? In a presentation appropriate for both the layman and the experienced scholar, this work demonstrates from dozens of texts that according to the authentic Jewish tradition the Rebbe unfortunately cannot be Moshiach.

This review is from: Can The Rebbe Be Moshiach?: Proofs from Gemara, Midrash, and Rambam that the Rebbe zt"l cannot be Moshiach (Paperback)
Gil Student has written a masterful book concerning the topic of Messianism and the Rebbe from Crown Heights. This book is a good asset to people in Jewish communities with pro-Messianic Habad congregations. Mr. Student speaks with utmost respect toward the Rebbe (who was a truly outstanding scholar) while criticizing those who believe that the Rebbe is the Messiah. The author clearly proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that the Lubavitcher Rebbe CANNOT be the Moshiach (messiah) . It is my hope that his point will get across to those who must hear it: namely, those who actually believe that the Rebbe is still the Moshiach. This belief that the Messiah will rise from the dead is inherently Not Jewish and Gil Student proves very effectively how this belief is not based on Jewish sources.
This is a wonderful companion volume to Professor Berger's book on Habad and messianism. Kudos to Gil Student for writing a most needed book for the Jewish masses.

5.0 out of 5 stars AN IMPORTANT BOOK- SCHOLARLY AND OBJECTIVE, July 7, 2005

This review is from: Can The Rebbe Be Moshiach?: Proofs from Gemara, Midrash, and Rambam that the Rebbe zt"l cannot be Moshiach (Paperback)
This book is important because it presents the controversial Lubavitcher views in an objective, meticulous and scholarly manner and clearly demonstrates that their views have no source in Jewish oral or written tradition. No non Lubavitch rabbi supports their positions. In fact, most great Rabbis view the more extreme Lubavitch as totally heretical and "beyond the pale" of normative Judaism, because their beliefs run counter to the thirteen priciples of faith. All the authors sources and assertions are carefully footnoted. The book is well written and fascinating to read.

Excellently written. Intelligent, insightful, learned and eloquent. This book is very convincing to all but those who have already made up their mind. A must read on the subject.
