What Can I Say??,
By
This review is from: Can I Say / Wig Out at Denko's (Audio CD)
I was 15 years old, at the Loft in Baltimore taking pictures of a friends band who was suposed to play when Dag Nasty hit the stage with Shawn Brown singing (before Dave Smalley, the singer on Can I Say). They blew me away. I was so mesmerized that I didn't take one single picture of them. I have loved them ever since. I was fortunate enough to have the chance to see them several times over the years. Each time they were better than the last. This CD is a MUST have. Classic. All of their stuff is great, with the exception of Four on the Floor (all I can say is WHY????). When people ask me what hardcore sounds like, this is the first disk I pop in the cd player. Great guitars, thoughtful lyrics, fast, loud, and sometimes angry, it covers it all. I even have the cover of Wig Out tattooed on my leg and am planning on making a wrap to the cover of Can I Say. This disk will become a part of you. Why are you still reading this and not buying it?

I heard a song on the radio one day a year or two ago. I had to stop and listen really closely, cause I thought I was hearing Dag Nasty. Turns out it's a different band...but I won't mention the name here. I chuckled to myself. So funny to hear such a strong Dag Nasty influence in a band whose catchy punk-pop tune was probably number one on the charts. My, punk rock sure has come a long way! Turns out the drummer of the band I heard that day has "Can I Say" tattooed across his chest!! Wow! I was right! Can I Say/Wig Out at Denko's is a must have for fans of oldschool hardcore, or anybody who is interested in hearing a kickass 80's hardcore band. Some member adjustments from Can I say to Wig Out but they're both great albums.

I remember when the Wig Out album first came out. At that time, I was an avid fan of HC -- I liked it loud, and I liked it fast. That's why I was suprised by the slower, more melodic tone of Wig Out. But, as I listened to it, (and listened and listened...) I realized that this album changed the face of hardcore. It showed me that a sleek guitar riff moldic singing and emotionally based lyrics (with harmonized vocals to boot) could surpass fast drum beats and screaming. Don't get me wrong, I still like my music hard and fast, but this album truly paved the way for alternative/HC as we know it today. I also think that today's emo movement evolved, at least partly, from this album. To this day, I still break this CD out as often as I can.

If you like fast, loud music, and you like Minor Threat and Scream, then you've probably heard this already. What can I say? Still sounds fresh, still gets the pulse going; sweet harmonic hardcore punk from the early 80s. Get some now!

These guys play their hearts out on this album and it shows. A great album for anyone who really enjoys good skate music. Reminiscent of Descendents and Minor Threat (more towards Descendents). A must-have. Highly recommend.

First off, I'd like to say that Dag Nasty is one of THE classic hardcore bands of our time, and this compilation of albums proves it! All of the songs on it are HC classics, and even though the members are not the same through the whole CD, the songwriting is still amazing! If your into positive, emotional, driving hardcore you NEED this disc! Not only is the music great, but the message that comes across in the lyrics is outstanding as well! I'm so glad that dischord re-released these two out-of-print records on one disc, it's a great deal. If you are a fan of the Gorilla Biscuits or any other late 80's hardcore, especially the emotional stuff, this is one of the best discs you can buy!: )

Dag Nasty is one of the many D.C. punk bands to thrive in the early 80's. But what makes them stand out among the rest is the explosive power of the guitar riffs with the bass and drums not far behind. And the combination of the two albums shows not only that bands can survive with different members, but also how they can grow and stay true to them selves.

these guys were around in the mid 80s, and they were making punk what it is today. some of the member from minor threat were in this band in its early stages, and theyve had different singers, but they have maintained a solid rockin fast bass heavy punk attack that has influenced so many bands. with a sound similar to later minor threat and so cal punk bands like bad religion they took punk into its next phases. and with such positive socially conscious lyrics they are sure to be relevant for many years to come. i think the newest disc w dave smalley on vocals is actually really good too.

This is one of my all-time favorites. Every song on hear makes me want to go jump on my skateboard and tear it up. this is definitely a punk classic that sits right next to the Descendents Liveage album. I recommend this to anyone who really enjoys great punk music.
