Editorial Reviews

Review

I ve known the Dawsons for several years and rejoice in their great faith in God amid severe trials. In spite of the obstacles of primitive conditions, sickness, and death, they have persevered for the souls of the Yanomamö Indians in the rainforest of southern Venezuela. This book is a gripping life story of the triumph of missions with all its mega-challenges. --Dr. George Sweeting, Chancellor Emeritus, Moody Bible Institute

I Can See the Shore depicts a life lived among the Yanomamö with gusto and good humor, while personal sorrows are overcome with grace and transcendence. Mike Dawson not only tells his own remarkable story, but also translates the experiences of Yanomamö shamans, warriors, and childhood friends as they struggle with illness and warfare and confront choices about how to live as Yanomamö in a modern age. --Amy Wray, Filmmaker, National Geographic TV

It s rare that a single book makes you laugh and cry. I laughed at Mike s jungle exploits and cried with him over his daughter s death. Very few people have the opportunity to grow up on both sides of the cultural fence as Mike and I have. Reading this book will highlight the Gospel as a multicultural message. --Steve Saint, itechusa.org

More About the Author

Michael Dawson is a missionary to the Yanomamö Indians in the Amazonas region of Venezuela. Michael was born in the middle of the Amazon jungle at TamaTama, a small mission base hacked out of the rainforest on the banks of the Orinoco river. He is the 5th of 10 children born to Joe and Millie Dawson who were among the first missionaries to the Yanomamo tribe. His first language was Yanomamö and he learned English when he was 7 years old. After graduating high school he worked for two years on the upper Orinoco river system taking portions of the New Testament to remote villages. The Yanomamö language contains many dialects and his purpose was to determine in what regions of the Yanomamo region that the current translation was understandable dialectally. He returned to the US for Bible School training in 1976 and finished missionary training in 79. He then spent a year in flight training.

Michael married Renée Pintor in September, 1980 and they left for Venezuela in January of 1981. They worked disciplining new Yanomamö believers, traveling with them to different villages showing them how to evangelize their own people. They have three boys, Joshua, Ryan and Stephen.

In June of 1992 Renée went to be with the Lord after an attack of cerebral malaria. Michael was also stricken at the same time. They were both evacuated to Caracas, but Renée did not recover. She is buried in the base village of Coshilowäteli. On her headstone are the words "She lives in our hearts as a penetrating reminder that not only is Christ worth living for, He is worth dying for".

Mike continued working with the Yanomamö. In Oct of 1994 he married Keila and they now have two daughters. Mikeila and Mia.In 1998 they began working on an experimental airplane to be used as a part of an integrated outreach plan to reach the entire Yanomamo people. Travel is difficult and, many times dangerous in the jungle. While distances are not that great, it can take days to get from one village to the next. The airplane was put in service in January of 2002 and has been a tremendous blessing to the outreach ministry, allowing contact with remote villages that would never have been reached any other way. In 2006, however, all flight operations in the jungle were haulted due to political pressures. All jungle airstrips remain closed to date.

On the 12th of Janury, 2006, Mikeila Reneé, five year old daughter of Michael and Keila went to be with the Lord. She became ill at about 1:00 AM and went unconscious at 9 AM. She passed away at about 2 PM. Normal radio contact is had with the mission base in town every morning at 6:30, however this morning for some reason, no radio contact could be established. Once again it was brought home to Michael the need to have aircraft based right in our jungle base.

Michael continues working with the Yanomamö in Amazonas Venezuela. He is involved in the outreach ministry and in the Bible school. Along with the rest of the team, he also helps in community development.

5.0 out of 5 stars Growing Up Yanomamo Part II - Terrific, August 25, 2010
This review is from: I Can See the Shore (Paperback)
Mike Dawson's work "Growing Up Yanomamo" won an award as Book of the year in 2010 for biography and this follow-on work (actually part II of the story) is not only an inspiring and heart-warming volume, but helps readers complete the important understanding of the activities presented in "Growing Up Yanomamo". I was privileged to spend an evening with Mike and Keila Dawson recently and can share that their story, as presented in these two volumes, is just the "tip of the iceberg", so to speak. I was inspired, encouraged, my heart ached, and I cried (yes, grown men do cry) at Mike's presentation and openness of their joys and traumas of life, and how God works through them. I highly recommend this book, especially to those who have read "Growing Up Yanomamo". You will truly have your emotions touched with laughter, sadness, joy, sorrow, and most of all inspiration to further illuminate your own life.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Personal Peek at Cosh, September 10, 2010
By
This review is from: I Can See the Shore (Paperback)
Lifelong missionary Michael Dawson gives you an intimate peek at Coshilowäteli, a tribal village in the rainforest of Venezuela. In his unique and refreshing style, Mike invites his readers to experience visits to Yanomamö villages, some welcoming him with open arms and some not so eager to meet "strangers." He shares personal joys and sorrows along with an up-close and personal look at the life of a Yanomamö shaman, exposing the dark side of the spiritual world. Michael even includes a unique view of Heaven...and Hell through the eyes of a shaboli (witch doctor). Travel with Michael and Keila and their family through the soul-wrenching illness and loss of precious Mikeila. Discover what it is like to travel for hours on an Amazonas river in a dugout canoe...in total fog. Hunt tapir with Michael and Julio. What is a shabono and does it keep you dry in the rainy season? How is God working in the lives of the Yanomamö despite the radical interference from the Venezuelan government? Let "old...mean and irritable Yobli" tell you!

Come and enjoy the wit and wisdom of Michael Dawson, a special missionary who is still trying to figure out if a sloth makes a good house pet!

This life story of a personal friend will share the realities of the costs to the missionary and his family when dedicated to an evagelistic ministry to a primitive tribe. One follows along through the heart breaking experiences of losing a wife to malaria, and later a child with a serious illness while in the jungle without plane support. In order to recieve the medical attention which might have saved her life. but throughout it all Micheal held to the promise of the eternity that awaits us and the reunion he will have with his family members across the shores. The book is written in such a way that you will feel kinship to the families involved and also become aware of your Christian Yanomami brothers in Christ.
