3.0 out of 5 stars studio wizardry; knob-twisting; polished gem
Falkner's songwriting has gotten better since his first solo effort. This record fills the ear in a good way with sounds eerily reminiscent of such pop acts as The Cars and ELO. The music is generally solid & listenable, and frequently it is outstanding, but after the sixth or seventh track all the studio wizardry begins to wear like the same surprising coat seen...

5.0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece that you just CAN'T afford not to own!, November 26, 1999
This review is from: Can You Still Feel (Audio CD)
Well, you only have to look at the other reviews on this page to get an idea of how good this album really is! But if you're still not convinced then READ ON... Jason was lured into the band Jellyfish (One of the most under rated bands of all time) with the understanding that his exceptional songwriting ablilities would be exploited. This however was not the case. He left, formed The Greys, recorded one album after which they all went their seperate ways. He then Started his solo career and recorded his first album entitled " Author Unknown ". Which leads us to this album. "Can you still feel" is I suspect the CD that every musician would love to have written and recorded. You listen to the songs a couple of times and you're hooked. The harmonies are exquisite. So much so that even after months of listening to them, the hairs on the back of your neck still stand up. On hearing the songs for the first time you will notice that the melody line never goes quite where you think it will and sounds a hell of a lot better that way anyhow! Mr Falkner (who plays every instrument on the album with the exception of the flute) Is quite literaly a Genius. This whole album is littered with instrumantal riffs and vocal harmonies that are addictive. To Conclude, if you don't own this CD, you're missing out on some of the best music in existance!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Complex, dense, but ultimately rewarding power pop album, May 20, 1999
This review is from: Can You Still Feel (Audio CD)
Prior to The Grays, no one had a clue that Jason Faulker was capable of producing such rich, complex power pop. At once recalling the Beatles, Badfinger and, to a lesser extent, Matthew Sweet this album is less accessible than Author Unknown, but every bit as melodic.

Musically, this is a step forward. The melodies and arrangements are still clean and direct, but go in unexpected directions always surprising the listener. Faulkner sings more confidently on his second release..clearly he has (pardon the pun) found his voice as an artist.

Emotionally and musically rich with witty, intelligent lyrics, Can You Still Feel? is one of the best albums of the year. God this guy is talented!

4.0 out of 5 stars Yes, We Can!, October 8, 2004
By
Henry Mena (Brooklyn, NY United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Can You Still Feel (Audio CD)
The textbook definition of the term `ear candy', Jason Falkner's follow-up to his formal solo debut 'presents Author Unknown' is another layered sonic treat that benefits greatly from the crystalline production of Radiohead and Beck collaborator Nigel Godrich. 'Can You Still Feel' doesn't break any new ground, however. In fact, like it's predecessor, it owes a great debt to the early '70s output of that other multi-intrumentalist and pop whiz, Todd Rundgren. That's not to say that Falkner is a slavish imitator--the man's just proud of his influences and wears them accordingly.

This is pop music made by a rocker with a keen sense of melody and arrangement, the likes of which are seldom heard on radio or MTV. Don't deprive yourself of it just because clueless, tone-deaf, bought-and-paid-for program directors choose to look the other way. Cheers!

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible !!!, January 13, 2003

Don't listen to the naysayers -- this is a great album ! Jason Falkner is a tremendously talented songwriter and a fantastic musician (check him out live !). I love this album. While Jason wears his influences on his sleeve (Beatles, Cheap Trick, Big Star, Beach Boys), and many references are clear, he does honor to those musicians by writing clever and thoughtful melodic pop music. Truly and original and thoughtful musician. Please buy this album !

5.0 out of 5 stars My Favorite of the Year, February 17, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Can You Still Feel (Audio CD)
After working in a music store all of 99 and hearing lots of CDs (over and over), I must say that this one is definitely my favorite of the year. I had never heard of Jason Falkner until finding Can You... among the promo CDs- I decided to give it a try and haven't gotten sick of it yet. Cover to cover my favorite since The Bends by Radiohead.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clean, Crisp, Polished, February 27, 1999
This review is from: Can You Still Feel (Audio CD)
First, I must say that it is an honor to be on the same page as Eric Matthews. You are simply wonderful. Also, I would like to thank my boyfriend, whose review is posted here as well. He introduced to me to accomplished musicians such as Jason Falkner, Eric Matthews and Spookey Ruben. About the album... Well, all I can say is that it is beautifully created and much more polished than "Presents Author Unknown," which, though magnificent, had some rough edges. As a classical pianist, it was enjoyable to hear Jason's background. "Eloquence" struck me as one of the most memorable songs ever.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good production, good songs, funny picture, February 3, 1999

"ooshie" (North of Crazy) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Can You Still Feel (Audio CD)
I really like the production of this one more than his first album. It's a much cleaner and crisper sound. I think the songs are also more consistent. Highlights: "Revelation", "Eloquence", "Author Unknown", "The Plan", "I Already Know", the rest of the songs. The CD booklet has a pretty funny picture of him (wearing lots of leather) being served drinks by a stewardess...flight attendant. That really doesn't add or take away from the CD in any way. I just thought I'd mention it. In closing, I'm honored to be on the same page as Eric Matthews (below). Thank you. Buy "Can You Still Feel?"

4.0 out of 5 stars American music can be cool!, September 5, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Can You Still Feel (Audio CD)
Listening to the constant stream of sad gangster rap or ear crunchingly dull soul that eminates from the American music industry is a deeply depressing undertaking. Thank god that JF can come through again and produce such a fantastic album which proves there is still Rock and Roll in the USA.

This album compliments music from The Divine Comedy and Devaid Devant and his spirt wife. If you like those bands you will love this. My most played album of the year.

Its amazing that just one man could create such a complete and rounded album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely stunning pop!!!!!!, June 2, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Can You Still Feel (Audio CD)
I was familiar with the name Jason Falkner, having seen Jellyfish when they toured Australia a few years back. I bought this CD on a whim as I was impressed with the cover art. I must now report that I'm sure that I have in my posession one of the finest and most consistent pop albums of ALL TIME. This is pure joy and I'm also stunned at the fact that Jason played the bulk of the instruments on this album as well. Sadly, I feel that this record will fall on largely deaf and ignorant ears(particularly in my country) as this music won't find a place on radio or TV. EVERYBODY should own records like this!

4.0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly Surprised!!!, May 2, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Can You Still Feel (Audio CD)
Maybe it's my age, but, I seem to have become very choosy upon hearing the new music of today, most of it rather boring. But when I first heard Jason Falkner my ears perked up. His sound is very original, his vocals are crisp and clear, he has a great voice for pop songs! His music is constantly going through my head. I wake up humming songs like Author Unknown and Holiday.....really great tunes. I admire the fact that he does all the work on both cd's and I think he does a great job. Keep up the good work, Jason! Your sound is so refreshing when put amongst most of todays blah blah blah samey sounding "artists". And I'm happy to say that my fiancee, in his recent obsession with finding us some great pop music to listen to, has found Eric Falkner!
