3.0 out of 5 stars Simple sure, but a little contrived
Okay, this was written by an adult, attempting to give voice to her son's perspective on living with AS. While this was a fine but narrow view of some of the characteristics of some AS individuals, sadly I found the text to seem a bit "dumbed-down" or overly simplistic--really not how most kids I know actually talk. I gave this book to my 10-year old who was recently...

Adam is a 9-year-old boy who has Asperger's Syndrome (AS). AS is a neurobiological condition that is on the autism spectrum. People who have AS confront any number of sensory processing and communication issues. Adam gives good, factual explanations for how and why people with AS run into social road blocks. The best part of this book is that Adam appears to accept himself and the AS part of himself. That is what makes this book so outstanding.

This book will no doubt prove helpful to adults on the spectrum in helping to approach the subject of being on the a/A (autism/Asperger's) spectrum with NT (neurotypical) relatives, co-workers and other peers. It is a wonderful introduction to a/A and bridges the chasm between a/A and the NT population. It brings all readers onto neuro-neutral ground.

How I wish I had had this book when I was Adam's age. How lucky Adam is to know what his "undefined differences" were at a young age! This book is definitely worth reading and I can't recommend it highly enough. It will help remove those road blocks that people on the a/A spectrum confront on a routine daily basis.

Please read this and share it with somebody. You will be so glad that you did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommend!, June 5, 2007
This review is from: Can I Tell You About Asperger Syndrome?: A Guide for Friends and Family (Paperback)
This book was found during my search for information that would assist our 13 year old AS (Asperger Syndrome) son to socialize with his peers. It proved to exceed my expectations and if I could give this book a 10 stars rating I would.

When my son read this book it was like a "light bulb" went off for him. It helped give him a clarity that I found difficult to explain. My only regret is that I did not have this book several years ago. It would have been extremely helpful to share with teachers and compassionate classmates during 4th or 5th grade when socializing was becoming an interest but he just wasn't succesful and other kids did not understand (or tolerate) his differences. But... better late than never.

One of the main things that I didn't count on was that this book also gave our son insight on how his classmates might react to him and how his misunderstanding of social cues and inuendos might make his classmates think he is unfriendly. It opened his eyes to the fact that he also has to be considerate of others and that friendship goes both ways.

Best of all, our son went through every page of the book and highlighted the areas that he felt described him. I now have a tool to share with others when attempting to describe how our son handles certain situations. It also gives me insight on specific areas that he still needs assistance with.

Thanks for such a great book. A must read for parents with AS or HFA (High Functioning Autism) kids as young as 6/7 years old.

Laurie

My 7 yr old son has recently been diagnosed with AS. Reading this book opened a lot of eyes to the reason why he does some of the things he does. He chose to share it with his classmates. The teacher read it to the class, to hopefully give them some insight into why my boy is just a little different than the typical 2nd grader. I loved the approach of this book. It portrays the image that different is not a bad thing it is just different.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous book for those new to Asperger's Syndrome, May 17, 2007
This review is from: Can I Tell You About Asperger Syndrome?: A Guide for Friends and Family (Paperback)
I purchased this book along with "Asperger's Huh?" shortly after my son was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome. While "Asperger's Huh?" was a huge disappointment (especially considering the cost) "Can I Tell You About Asperger's?" is a FABULOUS book!

I was worried that my son would find this book beneath him because of the very simple language (he hated the "Asperger's Huh?" book for this reason) but he loved it. He said it did an excellent job of explaining his "problem" to him and it doesn't upset him so much anymore.

We have shared this book with everyone in our family. Its a quick read, 15-20 minutes tops for slow readers, and everyone just raves about how wonderful the book is. The "Tips for Teachers" section is also very helpful and I plan to purchase more of these books to give to my son's teachers each school year.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a wonderful book, July 6, 2006
This review is from: Can I Tell You About Asperger Syndrome?: A Guide for Friends and Family (Paperback)
I ordered this along with another book to read with my 8 (almost 9) year old daughter who was recently diagnosed with AS. This book, written from a nine year old boy's point of view, gives a good look into what an AS child goes through. In addition, it also gives simple examples on how to make frustrating things a little easier for the AS child to deal with. I am having my entire family read it. I definitely recommend it if you have a child recently diagnosed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great tool for Explaining AS!, July 25, 2007
This review is from: Can I Tell You About Asperger Syndrome?: A Guide for Friends and Family (Paperback)
I love this book. It was an incredibly useful tool when I spoke to my son's class about Asperger's. It is easy-to-read and simplifies this topic for kids to understand, but provides enough information as to be of help for adults. Best of all, the book stresses the incredible value of all individuals, but especially the unique strengths that Aspies possess. I've bought multiple copies to share with teachers, family, Scout leaders, etc. A valuable tool!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Just Like My Son, May 9, 2007
This review is from: Can I Tell You About Asperger Syndrome?: A Guide for Friends and Family (Paperback)
Upon receipt of this book, my Asperger's 10 year old son and I immediately read it together. We were amazed at the similarities between he and the character Adam - the sensory integration issues, the social stigmas, and the exceptional abilities. Adam explains all of the things my son wishes he could.

We shared this book with my son's teacher & principal, who both thought it was appropriate to share with the class. I recommend this book for sharing with classmates as well as relatives and friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Overview of Asperger's for Kids and Adults Alike, March 11, 2005
This review is from: Can I Tell You About Asperger Syndrome?: A Guide for Friends and Family (Paperback)
I had this book recommended to me by a professional when we were going through the diagnosis process. It is simply written and easy for anyone of any age to understand. My 9-year-old with A.S. felt relieved when he read it because he could relate to Adam in the story and I believe this book helped him understand himself better. We are now reading it with our 7-year-old, who had noticed his brother was different than he is. This book is written in simple enough language to help him understand his brother. The adults I have shared it with have also found it helpful.

When you're faced with this diagnosis there are many great books you can read, but there is so much information to absorb it is easy to feel overwhelmed. This book keeps it simple enough to absorb the main points. Adam, the boy in the book, also tells readers that although there are many characteristics of A.S. they do not apply to every individual with Asperger's. For example he explains that he is bothered by loud noises, but others may be bothered by the feel of certain fabrics against their skin.

I highly recommend this book to anyone starting to learn about Asperger's Syndrome and/or looking for a good book to share with others.

I gave this book to my 10-year old who was recently given the diagnosis and is having a difficult time with the idea of having any kind of "syndrome". While he would not acknowledge his interest in the book, he did read it quickly. My hope was that the book would give my son some sense of what the term means and how it might relate to him. I think however that the book fails to acknowledge that all AS people are not computer whizzes for example, not all of them are poor at sports--my son is actually athletically gifted...at any rate, while hardly intending to be a comprehensive guide, I was still a little disappointed in the scope and particularly the penmanship of this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars My son now knows he's not 'alone', October 3, 2007
By
This review is from: Can I Tell You About Asperger Syndrome?: A Guide for Friends and Family (Paperback)
I searched everywhere for a book like this. There are books about Aspergers for parents, teachers, etc. But I wanted a book for my 13 year old son. For the first time, my son realizes he's not 'weird', he's not 'odd'. He's not alone. We read through the book together and I've even seen him reading it alone. At 13, an age of transition, this book was exactly what he needed to understand and be proud of who he is.
