I just spent the morning reading this book and absolutely could not put it down! Heather's story is heartbreaking and uplifting at the same time. You will laugh and cry but mostly marvel at how she has been able to forgive both herself and others in order to find peace and joy in her life.

Great book, great insight from a persons perspective that you think has the world in the palm of her hand, but behind the scenes realize life is not as perfect as it seems. Well written and quick read!

This review is from: Can There Be More? (Paperback)
My favorite genre is the memoir, so I was delighted when I picked up Can There Be More? by Heather Hogan. I am happy to report that I was not disappointed!
Heather writes with much introspection and insight as she chronicles her life thus far (37 years and counting). When Heather was still a baby, she lost her mother in a tragic auto accident. While growing up without the memory of a loving mother is bad, it proved worse for her older sister Kelly who was old enough to remember what they lost. Hardest hit of all, however, was their father Greg, who was forever changed by the death of this beloved wife, and not in a good way. From what Heather learned from family members, her parents had created a loving, stable environment that was the envy of many. After her mother's death, her father became a violent drunk, seemingly on a death wish. While he was successful in business and had money to spare, the old adage that money does not buy happiness rings true in Heather's account of her grim childhood. As many widowers are want to do, Heather's father marries too soon after her mother's death to a woman everyone hates, and proceeds to take them on expensive vacations, but his drinking and violence continually ruin any otherwise good time the family may have had.
As soon as she becomes of age, Heather moves away on her own to Maui and quickly becomes pregnant. Rather than being worried at the fact that she and the baby's father Sparky are broke and nearly homeless, they both delight in their newfound joy and get married. While Sparky is a wonderful father to their new baby daughter McKenzie, Heather realizes she married way too young and decides to divorce.
Heather crisscrosses between Chicago and Maui, eventually meeting her future husband Jason. Like many adult children of alcoholics, Heather is attracted to this man who drinks too much and is like her father in many ways, a combination resulting in a home full of chaos, anger, and resentment. Heather and Jason have two children together but over the years Heather finds that Jason's drinking and neglect remind her too much of her father and she has to get out of the marriage. As any parent would, Heather agonizes over the effect divorce would have on her children but eventually, wisely, decides that divorce is for the best. Unfortunately, she makes the mistake of falling in love with Mr. Right before Jason realizes the marriage is over and she is thereby labeled a pariah by many including those she had considered her friends.
With much reflection and faith, Heather looks back on her life including her mistakes and realizes it was all for the best. While her father remains to this day on his path of destruction, Heather's wise decisions ensure that her beloved children will not be effected by this tortured soul who is their grandfather.
This book will speak to many women. If you've been in an unsuccessful relationship (and who hasn't?) you will appreciate this delightfully thoughtful and optimistic book!
