5.0 out of 5 stars One of the truly great critics of American literature, December 17, 2008
This review is from: Can These Bones Live (Paperback)
I don't have time to review this book now or any of the other estimable works of the great American writer, Edward Dahlberg, so for now I'll simply say, get it and read it.

And then let us know what you think of it. But don't pay $300 for it unless you are a book collector. Get it from the library or buy it for five dollars. AND THEN READ IT AND TELL US ABOUT IT.

In this era of virtual reality and images, reading has gone into partial eclipse. Therefore, it is even more important that the best Americans read and study our American literary heritage.

It is probably inevitable that only a handful of people in every generation will have the courage and privilege to leave the safety of the crowd, and forge trails for future generations, but it is almost certain that without the help of previous trail blazers they will get lost.

Dahlberg's study of American Literature, Can These Bones Live?, is both a work of art, in itself, and passionate and lyric introduction to our all-too-neglected literature.

This study should be read by every serious student and pioneer of American culture, along with other neglected works of the past such as:
Classic Studies in American Literature
