I enjoy Priscilla Shirer's bible studies.
Mike Patterson
It also made group discussion a bit more difficult since we weren't answering specific questions, just reviewing what we got from the verse.

I think the book only works if you are open to changing.

The women's Bible study group at my church chose this book, together with the DVD series, for our study sometime last year.
The format is very different from Mrs. Shirer's previous Bible studies. The study is 6 weeks long and each week consists of 5 days of homework. Each week has a theme, which is covered in that week's DVD, presented by Mrs. Shirer, as well as in the book. The first day of each week, you are given one scripture and each of the following days you are given three to four scriptures to study.
Mrs. Shirer gives us a framework with which to study each scripture: 1) pore and paraphrase- read the passage a few times, let the Spirit speak to you and then write a paraphrase 2)pull out-write down what God is teaching 3)pose-ask yourself if you are following what God is teaching 4)plan and pin- record the steps that you will take to put into practice what God is teaching.
Mrs. Shirer warns that the student does not need to do this for all the scriptures that she provides for each day. In fact, this can be very difficult for a person to do - I know because I tried it, being a "fill in all the blanks" kind of person.
This style of Bible study obviously works well for Mrs. Shirer and I think that it worked well with some of the ladies in our group, however, I found the "p" format cumbersome and awkward to work with.

Pricilla is a great writer and speaker. I downloaded the video as reference on this and read and followed the study. It is written in such a way that you just want to grab a cup of coffee and sit down and chat about the bible. I used this on my lunch time break and I actual felt like instead of eating alone I was meeting a friend for lunch to discuss the bible.

The book is one that does just what any good bible teacher should do is "direct you to want to know more about God". Pricilla reminds you over and over that just as the conversation she is having with you, it's the same kind you need to have with God daily. I learned a lot from reading this book and have since found special time to just sit down and have a conversation with God just as in the book.

This is a good book to give to a new beliver or someone who is not really sure and you don't want to spend a lot of time trying to explain a denomination but you want them to get closer to knowing who God really is for themselves. It is so thought provoking as she gives humor and as a mother I love her stories reference to her children. If you are one of those who hates stories about family, espcially kids stories this is not the book for you but a busy mom who needs some time to study without having a lot of time will enjoy this. My kids are grown but I found myself remembering many of the moments.

When you finish you will..find yourself saying, OK God, Can we talk. What I got from the book was it wasn't so much about the author talking to you and telling you about the bible but trying to get you to see that you can as an individual get to a point from studying that you will want to take the time to talk to God yourself.

You feel like you picked up a new girlfriend in the process and you can't wait to move on to the next study.

I did this as my personal devotion although it's probably better in a group setting to bounce ideas off of everyone else. However, I found it really thought-provoking, kind of redundant sometimes(but again, with a group, I think the questions would spark more opinions and subjects) and overall a challenging devotional.

I did not like this style of study. I have done my share of bible studies and this format did not appeal to me at all. Basically, for each week there is a topic, and then for each day's homework she provided verses for the topic. For each provided verse you have to pore, paraphrase, pose a question, and plan a response. I could have handled a week of this but to be honest, this practice became very redundant, especially after 6 weeks of it. It also made group discussion a bit more difficult since we weren't answering specific questions, just reviewing what we got from the verse.

I just didn't like the format of the study. She is an excellent teacher and writer but I didn't like this one.
