Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Dedicated science-fiction fans will probably find this novel silly, but others looking for something a little wacky and not too taxing may be amused by its rendition of aliens running amok. Sometimes Mike Pillsbury's made-up stories about space battles seem more real to him than his life with two highly successful parents, a popular older sister and a mob of classmates who "think he's weird." Mike feels like an alien, but he doesn't actually believe he is one until the SOS message he launches into outer space ("I am being held against my will, trapped by ignorance and cruelty....") brings all sorts of strange creatures from other planets to his aid. By the time they arrive, Mike has found a girlfriend and decided that earth isn't so bad after all. Not all of his rescuers, however, agree that he should stay put. Mackel (A Season of Comebacks) glosses over the logistics of Mike's communication with aliens as well as his belatedly discovered intergalactic origins. She spends most of her energy describing the various extraterrestrials (ranging from a pink blob of goo to something that looks very much like a poodle) and lamenting Mike's isolation as a classic nerd. Mike's transformation into a hero, like his encounter of the third kind, is, perhaps, a little too far out of this world. Ages 8-12.

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-7Seventh-grader Mike Pillsbury may be a weird kid who doesnt fit in at school, a misfit in his family, and a disaster on the football teambut hes an alien somehow stuck here on Earth, so what does it matter? For years he has told his friends the story of his people, the Hanzels, and of their planets conquest by the evil snakelike Jongs. Then Katelyn, the girl he secretly likes, asks him to help design decorations for a Halloween dance. As they work on the project their friendship grows, but when the ultra-cool multimedia event is sabotaged, Mike flees in despair, rigs up an intergalactic plea for help, and sends out a distress signal that fries his parents satellite dishes. Soon, alien rescuers are turning up everywhere. Finally, Mike can leave Earthbut he realizes that Katelyn means too much to him and that he is starting to find a place for himself in junior high. When a Jong captures a neighbor kid, Mike and Katelyn scramble to save him, and Earth, from neutralization. This humorous, fast-paced science-fiction adventure is set in the real world of adolescent angst, bullies, and first love. Readers will wonder along with Mike what is reality and what is an active imaginationuntil the aliens start popping up. This imaginative romp will appeal to those who enjoyed Gail Gauthiers My Life among the Aliens (Putnam, 1996) and may just win some new sci-fi fans.Anne Connor, Los Angeles Public Library

Can of Worms by Kathy Mackel

Have you ever felt that you just don't fit in, that you're different from everyone else? Mike Pillsbury, a seventh grader feels that way. As a matter of fact, he is certain that he is in actuality an alien in human disguise. When, with the help of his parents' satellite dishes, he calls for help from his "fellow citizens of the galaxy," the fun begins. Not only does he get a response, but far more than he ever expected. Aliens from across the universe respond to Mike's cry for help. A Bom lawyer, a slimey worm-creature who is prepared to sue on Mike's behalf, Barnabus, the political activist concerned with civil rights violations, and the alien agent who wants to make Mike a star are just a few of the alien's that will have you in stitches. Aside from being a fun tale, this book is also a wry commentary on American society where everyone seems to want a piece of the action. Mackel has crafted a fun tale, full of fantasy, whimsey and adventure that will keep even the most reluctant reader enchanted. A must read for young people of all ages.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Can of Worms (An Avon Camelot Book) (Paperback)
Is there really such things as aliens, UFO's??? Who heard of such a thing?? In this book a kid has a strong feeling that he wasn't born here, in other words an ALIEN!!!!! He and a bunch of his frineds gather in his club house every night and he tells storys of different aliens that are bad. One thime he gets up to a story about his people, or so he thinks his people!! He is the smartest kid in 7th grade and he plays football too. He has barely any friends and until one day he gets asked to help decorate the gym for Halloween by the most popular girl in school... the tables turn for him!! But his old friend and also best friend doesn't like him being "popular" so he decides to shun him. One day while he is walking home from school he walks in his house and finds a real live alien in his room making slime balls all over the floor!! He can't believe it!!!! Has this alien come to take him "home" and if it is will he accept the invintation???

3.0 out of 5 stars Can of Worms is an entertaining read, January 29, 2000

Not usually my genre, this science fiction story revolves around the life of a kid who feels a little out of place in this world. It was entertaining to read about the adventures that he had and the trouble that he got into (the satellite dish scene was my favorite).

Parts of this book were slow, but not terribly so. It was full of fun and was an enjoyable book to read. If you like to read about aliens that may just be lurking out there, this book is for you.
