I CAN'T STRESS ENOUGH HOW DETRIMENTAL THE RAP GAME IS WITHOUT DRU DOWN. HIS PIMP-LIKE; LYRICAL HULA-HOOP RHYMES, LEAVE THE HIGH AND DRY MAINSTREAM JUNK SEEM LIKE KIDDIE RHYMETIME PAP. A TRUE WEST-COAST GENIUS AT WORK. SO DON'T DISTURB HIM, HE HAS MORE MASTERPIECES TO DO.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Can Feel Dru Down On This One, July 31, 2004
This review is from: Can You Feel Me (Audio CD)
Dru Down puts his name in hat of some of the best rappers to come out of the biggity biggity 'O'. As a writer said the production on here is flawless and the lyrics are astounding like on "Freaks Come Out", "Hustlin' Ain't No Thang", & "Underestimated"(featuring Sooperfly from the Dogg Pound). "Can You Feel Me" is a flat out classic use an old school Fat Boys beat. Now I haven't heard the first CD "Explicit Game" but this CD is worth having in your g-funk collection.

Dru Down is one of numerous Oakland rappers who despite a solid string of albums and a dedicated local following never quite pushed through to the mainstream. Outside of the Bay Area, he is probably best known for his guest spot on the classic 2Pac track "All About You." His sophomore album, 1996's "Can You Feel Me," is widely considered to be the best piece of his catalog, and it's an album that I've always found pretty solid but never outstanding. Dru's a pretty good rapper but doesn't stand apart from most of his Bay Area contemporaries; his pimping obsession and hustling tales aren't particularly distinctive, nor is his stuttery, high-pitched flow. The production on "Can You Feel Me" is pretty nice most of the time. Despite an array of producers that contains such big names as Battlecat and Soopafly, it maintains a very consistent Bay Area sound of steady, upbeat funk. There are more than a few beats that are sure to induce some definite head-nodding, and a couple of songs have some seriously nice instrumentals. There's some bump-worthy material for the car. I prefer Dru over some of the slower, more soulful tracks here than on the more upbeat ones, but the beats are solid.

This album has some glaring weak points though. There are a few instances where Dru's pitchy, high voice can be hard to take. Sometimes he shrieks when delivering a chorus, which doesn't come off too well, and there are some weak hooks. Dru's raps often and frequently stray towards a very average quality, and he tends to be easily outperformed by his guest rappers. His verses can be similar and redundant, and the lack of subject matter beyond hustling and pimping is noticeable. "Can You Feel Me" also sometimes displays the inexplicable weird quality of a lot of Bay Area rap from this period. The occasional odd production, frequent use of slang that one outside the Bay will not understand, and unintelligible conversational interludes come off as strange at points. The beats can grow a bit monotonous at times, and at 17 lengthy tracks, the album's running length is very bloated.

After the intro, the album opens with the Battlecat production "Playa Fo Real," a funky and upbeat opener. "Baby Bubba" has more great production, with some very nice horn instrumentation, but I don't like Dru's delivery at points here, especially in the hook. Otherwise it's a good song. I really like the title track, both the beat and hook are excellent, drawing a sample from an old-school track. "Choppin' It Up" is pretty cool, Dru raps conversationally over a funky track. I don't like "Head & Shoulders," the sex-obsessed rhymes grow tiring and so does the chorus. "Mista Busta" is an okay diss track where he calls out Too Short at the end. "Hustlin' Ain't No Thang" is a weaker song, and after an interlude it is followed by the stronger Luniz collaboration "Breezy," which showcases some vibesy, toned production. My favorite song is "Freaks Come Out." I love the production here, it is slow and very soulful, with an R&B-styled hook, the Luniz also appear here. The okay "Deal Went Bad" precedes the Soopafly production "Underestimated." Soopafly drops a verse as well as the beat on this song, the beat is nice but the hook is awkward. "I'm Wondering" is a little forgettable towards the end of the tracklist but not bad, and "Suspect One" is a late highlight, because it has one of the finest beats on the album, a very laidback and soulful g-funker. Dru also provides one of his best lyrical performances here, where he steps out of cliches to drop some insight. The forgettable "500 Mobsters" precedes the strong album-closer, the seven-minute posse cut "The Mobb." With six rappers and a good beat, this closes the album on a good note.

"Can You Feel Me" is a pretty strong album with some definite weaknesses. Bay Area fans should probably not hesitate to add this to the collection if they already own and enjoy similar releases by the Young Black Brotha label, the Click collective, or the Dangerous Crew artists. Fans who are unfamiliar with Bay Area rap might instead want to start with some more well-known material. I recommend "Can You Feel Me" to the Bay Area purists, because it has more than enough tight beats to go around despite some familiar rapping and weak spots.
