Review

"Creepy, chilling, and lots of nasty fun! Max Brallier gives the pick-your-own-path format a devious and very adult twist."
—Jonathan Maberry, New York Times bestselling author of Rot & Ruin and The Dragon Factory

"Funny, smart and damned gruesome. Way too much fun." – David Moody, author of Hater

"A fun pastiche of B-movie zombie fantasy and interactive horror novel . . . A boy’s own adventure that breathes a little well-deserved juvenile humor into the apocalypse." -- Kirkus

"Brallier's book may just be the best thing to happen to literary zombies since Max Brooks." -- Jacksonville Florida Times Union

I can't remember that last time I came across something that has been as thoroughly entertaining and laugh out loud funny as this book. When I bought it I was expecting over the top action and vulgarity... which it has in spades... but it delivers it in a way that is imaginative, hilarious and undeniably original. The characters and dialogue are of a much higher caliber than you would expect from a "Zom-com" book and author Brallier's fast paced, to the point writing style keeps the energy high and the pages turning throughout.

All in all a FANTASTIC read. Whether you're a zombie fan or not you won't be able to help yourself from laughing and consequently loving all the situations that you wind up in. I don't know how $10 could entertain you more!

This was awesome! Although, I must confess that I am just way too neurotic for this type of book. Well if you're anything like me I'm sure you've always wondered whether or not you'd survive a zombie apocalypse. I know I have and I've always come to the same conclusion... NO! I'm too clumsy, too OCD and way too neurotic to survive. I admit it (bows head in shame). Well, this is the book that may just help you come to terms with whether or not you'd survive or become a brain muncher like most every one else.

You, the reader, are the main character in this book (although ladies, you are a male)... but whatevah. I digress. You realize that Manhattan has had a zombie outbreak and you need to get the heck out of Dodge... what do you do? Do you take the next subway train outta there? Catch a cab? Or go home and hideout? Oh yes, these are the types of questions you will be asked in order to move on to the next chapter in the story. You will face moral dilemmas, strategic decisions, become a hero or die a gruesome death. The outcome will be based on your decisions.

Thus my problem! I died in about every way you can think of! I'm too much of a girl... or a wuss. I tried to run away... a lot, and that never worked out. Needless to say, I became a brainless brain muncher or was blown up to smithereens a few times. But, I still enjoyed it! This was so fun. I loved how each choice you made took you down a different path with your very own ending... some hopeful, some deadly and others inspiring. It was definitely different from anything else I've ever read (I was never into those "Choose Your Own Adventure" books growing up). Full of laughs, loads of action and just the right amount of zombie gore. A treat for zombie lovers! I'll say it again... it was awesome!

I will be honest, I am not a fan of zombies. In fact I think I hate all the zombie movies I've seen over the years. To my surprise I was blown away with this book. The idea seems so simple, yet it's so genius...creating a Choose Your Own Adventure style book for adults, complete with booze, broads, gore, violence, drugs and videogames. The book brought me back to the days of my childhood and keeping multiple fingers bookmarking pages where I made my decisions (mostly poor decisions at that). With that being said, the author really nails the "everyman" hero. It really felt like it was me making the decisions. It's like Brallier could read my mind and have all the cool things I've ever dreamt of crammed into 400 pages. If you want to join the NYC Hell's Angels and storm a zombie infested Madison Square Garden, it's in here. If you wanted to go to Yankee Stadium and fend off hordes of zombies on the baseball diamond fighting side by side by the New York Yankees and a hot stripper, it's in here. If you ever wanted to become a sniper working with the military, that's also in here. However, not all avenues lead to such amazing events and conclusions...you might also just find yourself staying shacked up in your apartment smoking and drinking your days/months away. I don't want to give too many of the surprises away. I have to give it to the author, Max Brallier's way with words is truly hilarious. He could have easily made this into a cheesy/lame story, with generic characters, poor dialogue and watered down violence. However, each character has there own unique personality and the violence delivers seemingly on every occasions. I guarantee the results of your decision(s) will surpise you.Read more ›

You the reader realize people are turning into zombies because you saw it on TV news. Zombies apparently have taken over much of Manhattan. You ride a train to Brooklyn you observe a zombie in your car dining on some poor victim. You must choose between intervening or move your butt to another car. Your adventures in the Zombie Apocalypse has begun as the reader makes moral choices in which being a hero may have the second order effect of becoming a zombie (remember as my nephew once told me John Wayne dies at the Alamo). Staten Island is rumored to be a non zombie zone, but to get there means riding the ferry where zombies seem to patrol the Manhattan side. Do you remain behind to help humanity fight the zombies, help the zombies raise awareness that they have rights too or do you move your butt to the free zone?

This is an adult version of the Choose Your Own Adventures (Max Brallier includes profanities and vivid gore especially if you choose wrong). Fans of this genre will enjoy Can You Survive the Zombie Apocalypse? there are numerous possibilities so if you end up zombie food, you can always back track and start either over in entirety or just take the other fork. Though zombies have starred in this genre (see Anson Montgomery's Your Grandparents Are Zombies that targets young readers) this is lighthearted escapist fun for adults only.
