The book is set up similar to a Twist a Plot or Choose Your Own Adventure. There are less choices than those old stories, but you do get to choose what the main character is doing every few pages. I can't remember that last time I came across something that has been as thoroughly entertaining and laugh out loud funny as this book. When I bought it I was expecting over the top action and vulgarity... which it has in spades... but it delivers it in a way that is imaginative, hilarious and undeniably original. The characters and dialogue are of a much higher caliber than you would expect from a "Zom-com" book and author Brallier's fast paced, to the point writing style keeps the energy high and the pages turning throughout.

All in all a FANTASTIC read. Whether you're a zombie fan or not you won't be able to help yourself from laughing and consequently loving all the situations that you wind up in. I don't know how $10 could entertain you more!

5.0 out of 5 stars So much fun!, February 10, 2011
This review is from: Can You Survive the Zombie Apocalypse? (Paperback)
This was awesome! Although, I must confess that I am just way too neurotic for this type of book. Well if you're anything like me I'm sure you've always wondered whether or not you'd survive a zombie apocalypse. I know I have and I've always come to the same conclusion... NO! I'm too clumsy, too OCD and way too neurotic to survive. I admit it (bows head in shame). Well, this is the book that may just help you come to terms with whether or not you'd survive or become a brain muncher like most every one else.

You, the reader, are the main character in this book (although ladies, you are a male)... but whatevah. I digress. You realize that Manhattan has had a zombie outbreak and you need to get the heck out of Dodge... what do you do? Do you take the next subway train outta there? Catch a cab? Or go home and hideout? Oh yes, these are the types of questions you will be asked in order to move on to the next chapter in the story. You will face moral dilemmas, strategic decisions, become a hero or die a gruesome death. The outcome will be based on your decisions.

Thus my problem! I died in about every way you can think of! I'm too much of a girl... or a wuss. I tried to run away... a lot, and that never worked out. Needless to say, I became a brainless brain muncher or was blown up to smithereens a few times. But, I still enjoyed it! This was so fun. I loved how each choice you made took you down a different path with your very own ending... some hopeful, some deadly and others inspiring. It was definitely different from anything else I've ever read (I was never into those "Choose Your Own Adventure" books growing up). Full of laughs, loads of action and just the right amount of zombie gore. A treat for zombie lovers! I'll say it again... it was awesome!

5.0 out of 5 stars A hilarious, highly enjoyable ride even non zombie fans will appreciate, February 13, 2011
This review is from: Can You Survive the Zombie Apocalypse? (Paperback)
I will be honest, I am not a fan of zombies. In fact I think I hate all the zombie movies I've seen over the years. To my surprise I was blown away with this book. The idea seems so simple, yet it's so genius...creating a Choose Your Own Adventure style book for adults, complete with booze, broads, gore, violence, drugs and videogames. The book brought me back to the days of my childhood and keeping multiple fingers bookmarking pages where I made my decisions (mostly poor decisions at that). With that being said, the author really nails the "everyman" hero. It really felt like it was me making the decisions. It's like Brallier could read my mind and have all the cool things I've ever dreamt of crammed into 400 pages. If you want to join the NYC Hell's Angels and storm a zombie infested Madison Square Garden, it's in here. If you wanted to go to Yankee Stadium and fend off hordes of zombies on the baseball diamond fighting side by side by the New York Yankees and a hot stripper, it's in here. If you ever wanted to become a sniper working with the military, that's also in here. However, not all avenues lead to such amazing events and conclusions...you might also just find yourself staying shacked up in your apartment smoking and drinking your days/months away. I don't want to give too many of the surprises away. I have to give it to the author, Max Brallier's way with words is truly hilarious. He could have easily made this into a cheesy/lame story, with generic characters, poor dialogue and watered down violence. However, each character has there own unique personality and the violence delivers seemingly on every occasions. I guarantee the results of your decision(s) will surpise you. Decisions that I thought were guaranteed to work completely backfired and ones that I thought were going to end the story spurred it along in clever ways.

To sum this review up, I was very surprised with how entertaining this book was. There is plenty in this book for fans and non zombie fans alike. Max Brallier's writing style literally had me laughing out loud on multiple occasions. Do yourselves a favor and check this out, you won't be disappointed! I'll be patiently waiting for the authors next book!

5.0 out of 5 stars From the Aussie Zombie, January 27, 2012
This review is from: Can You Survive the Zombie Apocalypse? (Paperback)
Do you remember the Choose Your Own Adventure books from your childhood/teenage years? They were amongst some of the most popular books in the library when I was in Primary School....all the cool kids had one!

So when I stumbled across this book I had to have it. Now. Right now. And thanks to the magical power of Amazon, I could have it almost now.

This isn't really a book I can review in great detail because, well the ending is different depending on the path you choose! The fun with these type of books is every choice you make influences how the story progresses and how far you get in evading zombies, helping the military or meeting a grisly end!

As such, you can't really determine when you have 'read' this book in it's entirety (unless you get a little bit anal and track which paths you have and haven't chosen and mark them off - I didn't go THAT far). However, that also means that you can pick it up at any time, read one 'path' and come back to it again and again.

The writing style is kinda 'blokey' and a little sexist towards women in some places, but hey, this is a pure fun book - and I loved it!

The book is set up similar to a Twist a Plot or Choose Your Own Adventure. There are less choices than those old stories, but you do get to choose what the main character is doing every few pages. The story is ok, and it does convey a sense of how tough it would be to survive a zombie outbreak in the middle of NYC. The biggest problem is the writing. It's not funny at all, although that's what the author is going for in some parts. It would have been far better if the attempted humor was left out and the story was left as survival horror. I noticed a few reader reviews that mention how great the humor is and they strike me as plants or friends of the author. There is a small section of the book devoted to a comic con that's supposed to be funny, but really comes off as roll-your-eyes stupid.

Zombie fans will probably like this. I give it points for being interesting, easy to read, and fairly enjoyable. But it's not well written, and the poorly attempted humor is very annoying. It may be a good fit for the 12-18 year old crowd, if the younger reader doesnt find the author to be patronizing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fairly good read., September 14, 2011

Not many spelling errors (which seems to be rare for e-books), the only problem I had was the lack of respect for females. The book was done from a male point of view (the main character is male) other than that it was a good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars This WAY! NO I MEAN THAT WAY! SHOOT I'M LOST!, May 30, 2011

I love the very original approach to telling an adult zombie story. I have tried twice and have yet to make it through alive. There have only been about 2 books I've re-read, and I plan on reading this at least a good six more times. Obviously a book where you choose your own paths will have more of a lure to get you back in to the pages. Every page is streaming with the living dead and you will sit there and ponder each decision like your life depends on it, because it does. This is a really fun read and every experience is different based on your decision making. Maybe you will be luckier than me, or maybe you too will make the wrong decisions and get eaten alive!!!!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Ideal for the Reading Resistent Gamer, March 16, 2011

Can You Survive The Zombie Apocalypse? By Max Brallier

This is a pick your own ending zombie disaster story.

Zombie stories seem to have created their own niche. The last zombie story review I wrote got some of the more vehement comments when I said I wasn't fond of zombie stories. I'm still not fond of zombie stories but I try and keep an open mind.

This book is billed as a pick your own ending for adults story. I guess some adults will read it but I suspect it will be more of the teen age guy crowd than your run of the mill adult.

I admire the ability to set up the convoluted turn to this or that page in these types of stories. Technically this book is quite sound. I found the characterization minimal at best. The characters were like cell phone photos compared to 14mb 1200dpi images, not a lot of depth and washed out features.

It is an amusing read and one that you can pick up and put down easily. There is very little captivation. It reads like a video game and most likely will capture a portion of serious gamers. Look at the success of Call of Duty's zombie section. With that said, again it seems like the book is focused on the young video gaming male and frankly that is a good thing. If you provide a book that is themed to their taste they will read. Getting young guys to read can be difficult so if this genre succeeds then kudos to the author. The zombie theme guarantees it will have a rabid and voracious following so it will no doubt succeed admirably in it's niche.

I recommend it, particularly for your reading resistant gamer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Most fun I've had with a book in forever!, February 12, 2011
This review is from: Can You Survive the Zombie Apocalypse? (Paperback)
It's CYOA with a zombie twist! Gory, imaginative, escapist fun. Just awesome.

Soooo many different scenarios - every time I thought I was done with the book, it felt like I found something new.

Def recommended. Even if you're not a zombie enthusiast - still a blast.
