Product Description

Size: Raspberry Pi Ultimate Kit | Color: Premium Black Case

NOTE: The pre-programmed 8GB SD card may appear as 1GB when inserted into a PC as it is pre-partitioned. The remaining space can be expanded as desired.

An exclusive Kit from CanaKit (TM) that includes everything you need to get up and running within minutes in the exciting world of Raspberry Pi!

The Ultimate Starter Kit version includes everything in the standard Starter Kit plus all the components needed to start using the GPIO port of the Raspberry Pi.

The kit includes a high quality Raspberry Pi case as well as the original Raspberry Pi recommended 8 GB SD Card pre-loaded with "NOOBS" (New Out Of Box Software). Just connect and be up and running immediately!

When you boot up for the first time, you'll see a menu prompting you to install one of several operating systems into the free space on the card. Archlinux, OpenELEC, Pidora, RaspBMC, Raspbian and RiscOS are all included.

The Raspberry Pi Case included is molded in a smooth finish ABS plastic and fits the Raspberry Pi perfectly. The case includes LED light pipes as well as GPIO access.

The kit also includes a 1A / 5V USB power supply specially designed and tested for the power hungry Raspberry Pi.

The cables appear to be very high quality and the case is great.

Best to get this set instead of buying everything in pieces - you save a bit of money this way.

The CanaKit basic kit includes the Pi, clear case & 1 amp USB power adapter so you can get started quickly. Here's what I think of the components (& recommendations for other stuff).

5V USB power adapter has long 6 foot cord. Adapter has LED to indicate power. Adapter has 1 amp output to ensure that the Pi receives sufficient power. Since the cord is removable from the adapter you can use this feature to switch the Pi on/off by just unplugging the cord from the adapter end. I would recommend doing this instead of repeatedly plugging/unplugging the micro USB end to avoid damage or wear on the soldered-on microUSB connector.

Clear case is nice. Pi press fits into lower case (don't be alarmed if you hear a snap at some point, that will mean it is locked. NOTE: Do not press on fragile components/connectors and if you're already using your pi before installing it into the case remember to remove your SD card otherwise you will most likely break your SD card connector!). Also, the top of the case has clear light pipes so you will still be able to monitor the LEDs with the case assembled. Finally the bottom of the case does have mounting holes so you can screw the case to a surface for permanent mounting (for projects etc). Case also has cutout for the GPIO pins so it wouldn't get in your way for hardware projects.

As for the Pi, well not much to say - it's a stock Model B (512MB) Pi with no modifications.

RECOMMENDATIONS
Since this is not a complete kit of everything needed to get started, you still may still need any of the following:

SDcard - I use

I was given this kit as a gift, but when I got it and connected it to my TV nothing happened. It would not boot and displayed nothing on the screen - it seemed dead.

It did not come with a "General Assembly Guide" as they claimed, so I had to do some reading about the Raspberry Pi online.

The problem was that it came with an 4GB SD card that is supposed to contain the operating system as stated: "4GB SD Card pre-loaded with Raspbian "wheezy"

However, the SD card was brand new in its package and contained nothing. It was completely blank, so the Raspberry Pi sits there and does nothing.

This is likely going to cause a lot of frustrated people to return this kit thinking they have a dead Raspberry Pi.

I had to download the OS from the Raspberry Pi website, and load it onto the SD card myself. I was lucky that that I had a laptop with an SD Card reader. After all that, it did boot and it does work now.

The Raspberry Pi is a tiny little computer and its cool to get it working, but this 'kit' does not give you what it claims it will.

You're better off buying the parts yourself.

I've been into micro-computers since I built my first one from a kit in 1978. This Raspberry Pi is a great teaching tool, and will no doubt inspire a lot of young programmers.

I also purchased the Raspberry Pi User's Guide, an invaluable aid in getting going on my projects.

I can't tell you how thrilled I was when I snapped the parts (keyboard, mouse, display and internet cable), powered it on, and saw the system boot up first time!

If you have a young person in your life, consider getting them a Pi instead of that next video game.

This is an example of extreme price gouging ($99.95 plus $12.50 shipping). To charge this much for a board that costs $35.00 and and then only throw in maybe ten dollars in accessories is outrageous. The Raspberry Pi Foundation, the creators of this board, a charity with a commitment to affordable computing, have a noble goal in spreading computing to those less fortunate as well as providing an open platform for creativity and innovation.

Anyone who would wish to make such a large amount of money on the back of a charity project should be ashamed. I urge nobody to support any seller who wishes to exploit the good intentions of others.

It looks like I'm in the minority here but I'm more than happy with this deal. I purchased it PRIME for $90 with free 2 day shipping just for reference.

Everything came very well packaged and is much higher quality than I expected. The cables appear to be very high quality and the case is great. Unlike another reviewer mentioned my SD card came ready to go so I had it up and running in about a half hour which includes rummaging around for a mouse and keyboard.

I paid maybe $10 more than I would have from buying a similar kit from one of the places that sells just the Pi for $35. They all seem to charge around $15 shipping on top of the price so to get it in 2 days to me was well worth it.

That being said you don't really need a case and most if us have power supplies, HDMI cables and SD cards lying around. I know I have enough in my drawers to get a few of these running without cases. I preferred to go with a starter kit for convenience and am glad I did. If I decide to get anymore then I'm sure I'll just get the Pi itself and match up what I have lying around.

Yes it's a bit over priced but it's also the fastest and easiest way to get started that I could find.
