This review is from: Canada (Insight Guides) (Paperback)
I buy the Insight Guides for armchair traveling, but they are becoming unreadable. This 7th edition (2007) of the Canada guide is a good case in point. The introductory sections are loaded with all the contempt and buzzwords and gratuitous insults that one could wish for in references to the Evil White Conquerors, even into the 21st century. These background essays read like freshman college assignments that parrot the cliches of the students' '60s radical teachers. My few glances through the rest of the book show the same treatment ("was built on land stolen from the Indians"; "jealousy of white merchants ... effectively barred the immigration of Asians to Canada until the 1960s"). Maps and pictures are nice, as always, but I've bought my last one of these. Maybe the Insight/Discovery people can be persuaded to simply include a booklet containing generic anti-imperialist/racist screeds with each volume and leave the propaganda out of the books themselves.
