Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6-These revised titles (1993) are a must for any Canadian school library. The entertaining texts are responsive to curriculum objectives or general interest reading. Each volume is packed with effectively organized information. Native, French, and English perspectives are included as are first-person accounts of what it is like to live in Canada. The titles have been updated and address current issues such as the challenges facing Western farmers and refugees, and note the creation of a "first self-governed native territory" of Nunavut. Numerous full-color photographs illustrate the books; however, only Land includes a map. In terms of scope and intended audience, these are excellent works.

Taken from Chapter 4: A land of extremes Be prepared Canada's climate often brings surprising changes in the weather. A warm wind called a chinook can melt a prairie snow cover in just a few hours. Thick Maritime fog moves quickly into the harbor and makes it nearly impossible to see a fishing pole in your hands. Hailstones as big as marbles sometimes fall during the summer, damaging farmers' crops in minutes. A warm spring day in the Rocky Mountains lures skiers in T-shirts and shorts to the bright, sunny slopes. The scout motto "be prepared" has special meaning for Canadian boys and girls!
