4.0 out of 5 stars A useful information source for newcomers to Canada
This book is a very comprehensive guide to everyday life in Canada. It covers a variety of subjects, e.g. job hunting, relocation, immigration and customes, accommodations, telephone services, education, public transportation, health care, personal finance, shopping, sports, and lots of other aspects of life in Canada. Even if you've been to Canada before as a tourist,...

1.0 out of 5 stars I'll be leaving this behind...
Having spent a year in Canada from 97-98 and considering emigrating in the near future I wanted a book that would give me a broad overview of the process of moving.

Unfortunately I found it poorly written, patronising, (the section on social etiquette is laughable to anyone with an ounce of common sense) vague and full of inaccuracies, including spelling mistakes.

Even if you've been to Canada before as a tourist, this book is still worth reading if you plan to make that move 'up north'. Note, however, that it's published in the UK, and many references listed in the book are geared more towards people who move from the UK to Canada.

5.0 out of 5 stars All you need to know - really., June 14, 2000
This review is from: Canada (Living and Working Guides) (Paperback)
It's amazing how much information is stuffed into this book. Almost every conceivable question about Canada and moving there answered. Written in a very easy to read format with occasional humorous cartoon and comment. Highly recommended for anyone thinking about moving to Canada. I can't wait to go after reading this.

I have got my canadian permanent resident visa and I am searching for informations of Canada.
Well, this book helped me a lot with good suggestions, tools, info etc.
I will recommend it to anybody is going to move to Canada.
If you want more immigration infos you should buy other books since this one is for people who already have the visa.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good for a European / UK migrant, June 10, 2000
This review is from: Canada (Living and Working Guides) (Paperback)
Top book, I have 5 or 6 but this one is the best so far. It is specific on many areas without being boring. UK published so may not be quite as useful to someone from the USA - END

It also can't seem to make up its mind as to whether it's a holiday guide or an emigration guide. Advice for your arrival in Canada consists of "There are two lines for immigration at the airport - Residents and Visitors. Make sure you're in the right one!" Oh, hilarious, folks. Fine if you're on holiday or already Canadian. If I'm a newly arrived Canadian-to-be, I'm neither. Where do I go?

There are some interesting sections covering the financial and legal aspects of life in Canada, but the book concentrates too much on trivial details, and refers you to out of date websites when explanations start getting complicated.

Even if you know next to nothing about Canada, give it a miss. There are far, far better books available on Amazon.com about this subject!

1.0 out of 5 stars misleading, March 20, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Canada (Living and Working Guides) (Paperback)
My Dutch partner is hoping to move to Canada with me in the future and we both thought it was a good idea to find more about emmigration. However I found this book had nothing to do with getting there as the synopsis suggested, but more to do with the "Canadian" way of life, culture and customs. And even these should be taken with a "grain of salt". This book is not what the title suggests and I highly reccomend looking on the net for more valid and up-to-date information.

2.0 out of 5 stars not very good, March 8, 2003

While this book is packed with all sorts of information about government, health, media, transportation, education, money, sports, shopping, etc., a lot of it should be taken with a grain of salt, since much of it seems to be the opinion of the author, not necessarily fact. As has been mentioned in other reviews, this book was published in the UK, so it's not quite as helpful a book for American readers like me. This is especially true after a quick scan of the book, which quickly reveals the complete dislike the authors feel about America. This is revealed in discussions of the rubbish of American TV leaking into Canada and comments such as "It isn't usual to ask people personal questions such as their age or how much they paid for things - both are considered rude (unlike in the States where such questions are commonplace)." Last time I checked, it was still impolite to ask those questions here. Anyway, there's some good basics on Canadian life here, but I wouldn't say it's a good all-around guide for someone thinking of moving to Canada.

2.0 out of 5 stars Living and Working in Canada, April 22, 2002
This review is from: Canada (Living and Working Guides) (Paperback)
While this book had some good information, it just sort of lumps it all together. The cartoons look as if they were taken from a 1981 "Mother Earth News." Some needed information was not included. There was nothing mentioned about working for an American or French employeer in Canada. And there was very little information about working in Quebec: just passing references about it being "different" than the rest of Canada.

1.0 out of 5 stars not worth your time or money, September 13, 2005
By
This review is from: Canada (Living and Working Guides) (Paperback)
I'd give this book a "0" if I could. There is a shameful lack of specific information in this book. The author speaks only of Canada in general, rather than by province. This is the first review I have written because I feel compelled to tell people not to waste one cent or one minute on this book!
