People need to grow up,
This review is from: Canada Songs (Audio CD)
Honestly, people who claim this isn't grindcore should take a minute and think. When did anybody in this band ever claim to be grindcore? This is nothing like any other band, its something orginal and all everyone can do is rag about how this isnt grindcore. Instead of listening to every generic grind band, give this band credit for doing something original. By the way this cd is great, any fan of this should check out as the sun sets, this was the band before daughters.

This album is amazaing. I can sit here allnight and describe them cause thats how long it would take. Ive seen them live and man o man it was amazing. I would even pay a 100 bucks for this album. If your into a crazy style of metal get this album. You cant label these guys as any type of metal. Its grindy, thrashy, technical and even a little jazzy. Its amazing. If you like bands like the number 12 looks like you or bands like that then youll like this alot. One of my favorites.

One of the most lovable & sick albums in my collection, Daughters' _Canada Songs_ is a technical and rabid onslaught, with that ineffably disturbing excitement only the best grind delivers. The thing is tho', where most techy-grind bands sound pretty cool/calculating or pissed right off, Daughters are absolutely insane. I would like to say they found the tabs for these songs scrawled in blood and feces in an abandoned asylum! That's not true obviously but it sounds realistic. Even though the songs are usually only around a minute in length, you'll be hard-pressed to tell where you are in the piece. And so while this makes it tempting to call _Canada Songs_ utterly chaotic noise, and delicious noise at that, there is too much careful structure and performance in Daughters' miniature episodes. It's almost too spastic and too clean to just be grind, but it's so abrupt, brutal, and fast and CRAZY. if we get caught up in labels we might be here all day so whatever. The hyperspeed onslaughts and off-kilter, odd-time breakdowns are always punctuated by absolutely gross vocals and switchback riffs bouncing erratically through different tempi without warning. Imagine Melt Banana, but very polished/refined! The whole album is what 11 minutes? but has numerous twisted moments to agitate you: samples of porno-jazz/elevator musak, short-but-sweet post-rock like build-ups on a static key, or the mentally disturbed proginess of certain passages. If you make it through the vertigo-inducing minute of the opening cut without vomiting, then you will absolutely love the rest of the album. check it out!

This album is one of the best grindcore albums ive heard in awile. I cant even describe how this album is i can only talk about other albums that are similar. The band they reminded me the most of when i first listened to them was The Number twelve and also From a second story window. Im at a lack of words to say how awsome this album is all i can say i go out and buy it

If you're an ardent lover of technical metal but with a steady hard-on for Hardcore and the crazy ways some cats can mix it up like me, you might already own this. But this album still deserves a review even after four years. The Cult of Canada Songs can be discovered upon the first 38 seconds of the 11 minute cascade of jarring musical detatchment it sets you up for. You'll understand you've never heard anything like this before, and then proceed to figure out why at least 500.000 people might fall in love with this insanity. There is no proper way to explain, or even categorize Daughters! But the Utter heavniness and technical brutlaity and inaudible screeches that Canada Songs Emits, suggests the terms "Grind" "Screamo" & of Course "Noisecore" which are equally suitable. But This band simply cannot be measured down to one name. Canada Songs is a mere 11 minutes long, and after it you'd feel like you just woke up from some grindcore nightmare. The most outstandingly different thing about the album is its oddly tuned, speedy shredding that displays the debacle. The Bass & drums provide the mainground for the ear bending as well. The drummer hits a double bass with the most precise intensity I've ever heard, it sound machinelike, and the bassist just grooves along the epic. The fast paced violent guitars swarm above jagged jaw dropping drum patterns and in 3 more seconds succumb roughly into mind bending little breakdowns and freaky little jam outs that end up in amazing little shorts that will get lodged in your head for weeks on end. The album is better interpreted as one swallow considering the length of the songs, but it's stil fun to choose your favorites. Theres really nothing you can compare this cacaphony to, you just have to experience it for yourself. This album took many by storm, and exploded in it's own little beatiful way. Truly An album for anyone who enjoys originally heavy but also utmost demented music. Of you haven't heard of these cats already, GET ON IT. This review is from someone who just decided out of the blue to pick this one up while doing my monthly cd selection at my local music store. And this is one that at first I was shocked by, but ended falling in love with it. One of the most entertaining cd's I own. Not to mention the awesome trippy artwork by one of the guitarists, very abstract. Just buy it

Let's kill the vocalist for just one minute and get the story straight. Daughters are a Rhode Island band. Minus the drums, and the vocals, this is somewhat similar in sound (not vision) to the approaches of pere ubu, james chance, and most similary to me, massacre. The band unintentionally mixed these elements with a more conventional style of hardcore, grind influence drumming, and vocal setting, hence the fuss. Obviously they kept the spirit of grindcore somewhat alive. They naively mixed these ingredients and released something that fans of more mainstream hardcore and metal bands can get into, while exploring uncharted territory as well. The best of grind bands have always known to never look down upon the artistic ambitions of people play music from the soul. People who understand grindcore and hardcore to a certain extent know to never look down upon those who chose to embrace the genre or any other genre of underground music artistically, and its become a plague thanks to the dying ethics and state of grindcore in particular, and the world as we know it in general. My friend bought the new brutal truth cd, and didn't think twice when he found out the last track was a minutemen cover. The album is a great if not decent, wellsprited, polished album. Even after three decades, grind will never become victim to the plagues of such nonsense attitudes, and practices, such as comparisons, and classifications, etc. They only comparison i have between any band are those who trying to push themselves and their boundaries to create an art or those who merely exploiting music for their own foolish intentions. Yes we know...Discordance Axis was better, i miss them too.

Cool,

Imagine a hybrid of Napalm Death and the Dillinger Escape Plan and you might come close to describing Daughters interesting sound. This album is one of those albums that easily warrant a repeat all (since it's only 11 minutes long, essentially), and really displays a seamless knack for rolling up speed, spaziness, and actual songwriting. It never sounds forced or sloppy, just clear and concise in it's crazy attack. The vocals are shrieking, and while nothing special, they get the job done well. Defintely a good find.

It will cost you a dollar a minute.,

Imagine if all bands charged this rate. Your average heavy metal cd would cost 40 dollars. Progressive metal bands would be charging from 60-80.The music on this cd is great, but it's insulting that the band and the label markets this is a full length. There's a reason most grindcore albums have 20-30 tracks. Besides, how lazy do you have to be as a band to exist from 2001 to 2008 and release a total of 35 minutes of music? That's 5 minutes of music a year. Very hard working band. Don't get me wrong, the music on the cd is great. Whether you call it grindcore or not, it's intense and imaginative. I just hope no one is actually giving their money to these people. |
