Gaze and wonder!, January 20, 2008
This review is from: Canaletto and the Venetian Vedutisti (The Library of Great Masters) (Paperback)
Those who have already come across 'The Great Masters of Art' series by this publisher will already be aware of the high standards of the reproductions. This book is no exception. Ninety glossy pages of Canaletto's work and those of his contemporaries, the most famous being Luca Carlevarijs, Bernardo Bellotto, and Francesco Guardi. We even have the delight of some paintings by their fifteenth-century predecessors, Gentile Bellini and Vittore Carpaccio, to gaze at in wonder.
The text by Filippo Pedrocco - an expert on Venetian art generally and curator of the city's museum of the eighteenth century at the Ca' Rezzonico - is insightful and informative. He supplies a bibliography and there is an index of works shown in the book at the end.
All in all an economical and glorious introduction to the Venetian Vedutisti of the eighteenth century.
