More About the Author

Diane Grindol is a pet sitter living in Monterey, CA. She keeps companion birds and writes a column for BIRD TALK magazine. She attends an animal drawing class once a week, takes photos of the Central Coast and pets, and is active in her church.

Diane has written several books for companion bird owners, including "Cockatiels For Dummies(R)," "Birds Off The Perch," and "Teaching Your Bird to Talk." When she speaks to bird clubs and rescue groups, she points out that the first Europeans to describe cockatiels mentioned mainly that they were good to eat. Living in California, she calls her flock an earthquake preparedness kit.

Diane's interest in writing, photography and animals is combined in these books of haiku poems: RESKU, Dogku, Catku, Horseku, Birdku and Petku! Diane originally learned about haiku in the fifth grade, and started to write it again while participating in a small writer's group. She's quite addicted to haiku.

Diane was an exchange student in Turkey during high school and spent junior year abroad in France during college. She grew up in Rolling Meadows, IL. Diane attended William Woods College in Fulton, Missouri and graduated with majors in art, French and home economics. She did graduate work at the University of Missouri/Columbia and the Monterey Institute of International Studies. She completed Landmark Education's "Curriculum For Living" and also did the Wisdom Course and many seminars offered by Landmark Education.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book, not as comprehensive as Barron's Handbook, June 27, 2004
This review is from: The Canary: An Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet (Hardcover)
Diane Grindol has written another useful and interesting book for the bird owner's library - THE CANARY. This little book is a good basic volume with diet, grooming and other health care tips including a section on various ailments such as mites, cysts, and canary pox. In various sidebar sections Grindol includes a recipe for pellet muffins, the benefits of formulated diets and and how to turn seeds into nutritious treats by sprouting them. Her sections on cages and cage supplies, as well as perch choices are probably cover some of the most important aspects of canary ownership. Apparently, canaries can become ill if they sit on the same sized perches all day.

I did not find this book any more useful than the Barron's handbooks on canaries although it does include a few different features. My book is a hardback and will probably last longer than the books with paper covers. This book includes many charming photos as do the other books I purchased - however, two of them show a canary with a Siamese cat, which made me wonder about the advisability of letting a cat so near a canary, even for a photo op. The book includes a description of the most common canary, the `German Roller' which apparently has the most beautiful song. A useful feature of this book is the list of Internet sites you can visit if you really want to investigate canaries in detail.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT HANDBOOK FOR RAISING CANARIES, August 19, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Canary: An Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet (Hardcover)
This book is a wonderful source of worthwhile information about these beautiful songbirds. Each chapter is well-written and contains many superlative color photographs diplaying the various breeds and explaining other useful pointers. There are also excellent information boxes that provide essential information for canary owners. The hardback version is very reasonably priced and is a fine addition to any bookshelf. Without hesitation I genuinely recommend this book as the best on the topic and a great read for canary lovers everywhere.

This review is from: The Canary: An Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet (Hardcover)
This is a great book for any canary lover. Before I read this book I did not know much about this animal other than seeing him getting chased by Sylvester. Diane writes wonderfully, you will be through with the book before you know it! Clearly an expert in the field, her love for these birds is obvious as you read this book. Whether you own a canary now, or are just thinking about getting one, you must get this book!
