Book Description

The adventurous husband and wife team from Jack & Dora Do L.A. is back!

"Robert Szeles has captured part of the essential magic of L.A., a rare treat in a time when the city is merely a static backdrop for most authors. There's a touch of Raymond Chandler's deadly playfulness in his treatment of the fantasy landscape of the city, and his use of sexuality for both tension and healing is refreshing and quite unlike anything else I've read."
- Ryan Harvey, Winner of the 2011 Writers of the Future Award and Black Gate Author

"Jack and Dora are 21st century L.A.'s equivalent to Nick and Nora Charles (except they're involved in seduction, not detection). Take the witty repartee and charm of Nick and Nora, add a little more sex (okay, a lot more sex), a little less alcohol, some old world magic, and a lot of hip action (literally)."
- Rachel Olivier, editor, and author of The G.O.D. Factor

Jack and Dora are witty and openly adventurous characters whose passion for each other makes these enjoyable stories even more charming. The scenarios they somehow get themselves into are funny and alluring. A great read if you're into erotic stories with a hint of romance.
- Christina E. Rundle, Author

"The Jack & Dora stories flow very nicely and contain unique and interesting conversations. And, they'll be sure to heat you up on a cold rainy day."
- Gil Roscoe, author of Company of Thieves

Dora hates the ugly black wooden canary statue Jack just bought from an art dealer and she'll do almost anything to get rid of it. Then Dora remembers how much Jack loves Catwoman and comes up with a plan to kill two birds with one claw. A comedic contest of wits and wills where everybody wins and one person loses. An exploration of fetish and fascination.

"Cat and Canary" is a quick-witted romantic romp that teases the reader with just the right amount of sexual tension. Jack is sexy and stubborn, self-assured, and clearly in love with this sexy wife Dora. She, for her part, is head strong, intelligent, and as equally self-assured as her beloved husband. Although it is a short story, and a quick read, its very clear right from the beginning that Jack and Dora have a teasing, playful, relationship that borders on the tempestuous. The chemistry of their romance is grounded in a shared sexual passion, which allows the tension of this story flow from the problems that arise when passion takes a back seat to their more stubborn natures. If you enjoy these characters as much as I have, then I recommend reading the author's full novel, Jack & Dora Do L.A.

I don't know if it was intentional, but I see this story as a recent avatar of a great archetypal conflict in the American subconscious. Not Good vs Evil, not Man/Woman, Yin/Yang, Fire/Ice, Yanks/Sox... Sylvester vs Tweety. Tell me your tastes in literary conflict weren't affected by all those hours of watching cats get flattened.

"Cat and Canary" tosses out other icons, as well. Like Julie Newmar as Catwoman. Definitely Statuesque. Not unlike Dora, who is less the sexual explora in this one. Closer to Lysistrata cutting off the "kitty" to defend the hearth and home. And the canary here isn't some cute little Tweety, either. More of an Angry Bird on the make. And displacing Jack's affections and totems in a way few fleshly females could manage.

I enjoyed getting this short look into Jack and Dora on the "after" side of "happily ever". They seem very domestic in this one, but I'm guessing it's just an interlude. But not without one of author Robert Szeles' velvet menaces. And not without Dora stepping up to deal with it, even if it calls for a "statutory" offense.

Short, sweet, L.A.Jungian, and fun.
