4.0 out of 5 stars First bossa nova record, March 2, 2000
This review is from: Cancao Do Amor Demais (Audio CD)
This is a historic recording, as it is considered the first bossa nova record ever. It was set up by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius De Moraes, who together wrote all of the songs, which Jobim then arranged. Elizeth Cardoso was asked to be the singer on the record and Joao Gilberto was also enlisted to accompany Cardoso, playing in his, then new, bossa nova style. Thus the historic significance of the record. As it is a kind of a transitional record, the bossa nova style isn't completely established. Elizeth Cardoso doesn't sing in a bossa nova way, but rather in a more traditional, dramatic style, and if anything the record shows just how revolutionary Joao Gilberto's style was, when he broke through some months later. Also the instrumental side isn't as slick or 'cool' as it would be later on Gilberto's albums. Still it's a worthwhile album. It features some of the earliest versions of classics like, for instance, 'Chega de Saudade', 'Outra vez', 'Eu Nao Existe Sem Voce' and 'Estrada Branca', plus some lesser known beauties like 'As Praias Desertas', 'Caminho De Pedra' and 'Janelas Abertas, and even if it isn't bossa nova in it's full bloom, the music has it's own late fifties, tropical, kind of atmosphere, which makes the record pretty enjoyable to listen to.

ok, so Elizete doesn't sing with the uninflected style of the bossa nova singers the rest of the world knows - see last review. it doesn't matter. her vocal style is marvelous, her appetite for the music is infectious, and her interpretations are delicious. this album is great in the same way that the Tom and Elis album is great - wonderful talent soaring over, and taking pleasure in, the music being performed.
