Book Description

September 13, 2011
"What the hell did you send me home with last night?"

Robotics engineer Johnathan Michaels knows all about biding his time. For three years he's worked next to his best friend and idea of a perfect woman, Alexis Rodriguez. Their friendship sparks into a heated attraction while saving the company's first multi-milion dollar contract. Johnathan's life appears to be on track. He owns a successful company and he's won the woman of his dreams. Life is perfect until a previous one-night stand returns Johnathan's shirt.

Pregnant. And it's his.

Now Johnathan's too distracted to keep up at work, wondering if the baby is his, and if so, exactly how does he tell Alexis?

CANCELLED is a tale of one man's romantic adventures, as Johnathan strives for life beyond bachelorhood. The book bends the genre rules of contemporary romance and chick-lit with a male POV and a twist on the ending. 75,000 words.

"A fun, romantic read with a surprising twist: a real, believable, and utterly sympathetic protagonist--who happens to be male." -- Anne R. Allen, best-selling author of The Gatsby Game, Ghostwriters in the Sky, and Sherwood, LTD.

Girl loves boy, boy acts elusive, girl wins him over, and they sail into the sunset. Romance books have a formula. That's not necessarily always bad. Anything well written is worth reading, but what an extraordinary surprise to find an entertaining and beguiling romance novel with a male point of view and not so standard formula.

Johnathan is unabashedly in love with his coworker. Has been for years. They've been playing a tango of dating the wrong people while avoiding their true feelings. They finally come together, but there's one problem . . . Johnathan recently woke up to an unknown woman in his bed, a woman who is now pregnant with his baby.

Never have I become so attached to a male character in a romance novel. Normally the men are cardboard cutouts and barely fleshed out. In CANCELLED, you see Johnathan struggling with the right thing to do. He puts family first, thanks to an unconventional upbringing. He avoids his psycho mother like the plague, while fully embracing his stepmother, Anna, as family. Anna quickly became one of my favorite characters in the book, outside of Johnathan of course.

Johnathan is so expertly layered; the reader gets to see his conflicts at work and in love while also watching him make difficult choices. He's not perfect, but I was rooting for him from early on. It was so refreshing and rare to be rooting for the man in a romance/chick-lit novel. Plus the ending definitely defies the romance formula, and I loved it. Not giving away anything more here.

I highly recommend this to readers who enjoy romance but are looking for something outside the standard cookie cutter story. This story is a breath of fresh air in a sometimes stale genre. And I say that as someone who enjoys a good romance every now and again. I just want them well written and interesting. This one certainly fits the bill.

What an effortless and fun book for the weekend !!!

I thoroughly enjoyed the book from start to finish. I (obviously) sided with Mr Michaels in the whole child /new relationship scenario and found Alexis to be a most ruthless lady as it turned out !! Read it, I assure you, you will not regret it !!

Cancelled is a wonderful story told predominately from the male point of view. I was hooked by the main character and his dilemmas with his love life, his business problems and his family issues. There were plenty of twists and turns which kept me turning the pages from beginning to end. I rooted for the protagonist as he tried to figure out what was best for his family, his friends and himself. And I adored his devotion to his family which, in my book, made him a true hero.

I'm looking forward to more books by Elizabeth Ann West!

3 Questions with Elizabeth Ann West:

What is your goal with the modern romances and relationship-centric stories that you write?

* To make readers say, "Phew! Glad my drama's not that bad!"
* For my characters to feel like friends you'd gossip about over Sunday
brunch! Oldest of three girls, and raised in the South, I know all about
"Did you hear about so-and-so?" over Mom's waffles and bacon.

Why should readers buy your books?

* As an indie, I don't have someone telling me what will or won't sell to
readers. I can share the stories in my heart.
* My characters live and breathe where they were created in my mind,
giving them another layer of authenticity. No chasing setting trends
here!

What inspires you to write the stories that you do?

* Anytime my brain says "That ain't right," I know there might be a story
there. CANCELLED touches on the harsh reality that fathers do not have
equal rights in custodianship of their children. I've been in those
courts fighting for my stepson; I've seen it.
* My next work, the novella STONE (April, 2012), has physical and
emotional abuse take center stage. I'm challenging the convention that
things must be escalated out of control before it's labeled a "problem."
He, or she, doesn't have to hit before it's unacceptable. There are many
ways love turns into control, and it's usually by inches, not feet.
