Book Description

The Mind/Body Medicine Library May 1998
Dr. Collinge explains how mind/body medicine can be used to enhance the effectiveness of the immune system; reduce pain and the side effects of chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery; and speed healing. Through the exercises, Dr. Collinge shows how to build vital energy, strengthen the body's immune defenses against cancer, amplify the effects of nutritional and medical therapies, remove the waste products of the healing process, and reinforce healthful change in behavior and lifestyle.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Emphasizing the importance of positive mental health upon physical conditions, holistic medicine practitioner Collinge offers these guided self-healing sessions. Each program begins with background information about cancer, stress, or heart disease/hypertension and its clinical manifestations. The rest of each program is the same for all three tapes: an experience in deep meditation and hypnosis designed to spark healing. Warning the listener not to use these tapes while driving, Collinge offers a calm, reassuring experience set to gentle, unobtrusive background music. Although serious listeners will eventually want to purchase their own copies, these will be useful for the increasing number of people curious about alternative medicine who want to try them before buying.?Susan McCaffrey, Sturgis Middle Sch., MI

From AudioFile

The life-or-death nature of a cancer diagnosis opens a patient's mind to mind-body healing techniques he or she might not otherwise consider. In this program, the author of a number of psychologically minded health audios offers a holistic guide to the challenge of cancer. The content and empowering approach offer psychosocial, herbal, and lifestyle remedies that anyone can implement. Coping with cancer is complex--forcing reconsideration of lifestyle, as well as philosophical and coping preferences that in better times are taken for granted or ignored. The program offers many choices to consider. The second half of the program consists of meditation and relaxation guidance offered to the sound of comforting music. 5.0 out of 5 stars Much More Than The Title Implies, January 15, 2000
This review is from: Cancer : A Guide for Alternative Self-Healing Techniques (Mind/Body Medicine Library) (Audio Cassette)
William Collinge, M.P.H., ph.D has worked at Harvard's Mind/Body Institute and U.C.(Berkely). In this set of two tapes, he both lectures and guides meditations.

Tape 1, Side A: Contains a lecture, starting with a description of what a cancerous cell is, how the immune system functions to maintain a healthy body, current findings about the interconnection of the immune and nervous systems. The negative effects of stress on the immune system are discussed and East/West techniques are introduced. Finally he gives very convincing evidence that daily practice produces cumulative beneficial results. Side B: Starts with "watching the breath" and segues into enhancing the fighting ability of the immune system.

Tape 2 contains two guided meditations. Side A: contains a total body relaxation technique. Side B: Contains an interesting meditation that starts with the body and progresses to spiritual ideas, with additional emphasis on constructing a personal health plan.

The meditations are strongly guided (mildly hypnotic), which is useful if one is not feeling well, or has little experience in meditation. Although designed with the cancer patient in mind, the ideas are general. I would recommend these tapes for anyone with a serious health problem or for anyone searching for a strong core on which to build a personal health plan.
