Book Description

December 31, 2010 1605474312 978-1605474311 Fifth

Updated to include the newest drugs and those currently in development, Cancer Chemotherapy and Biotherapy, Fifth Edition is a comprehensive reference on the preclinical and clinical pharmacology of anticancer agents. Organized by drug class, the book provides the latest information on all drugs and biological agents—their mechanisms of action, interactions with other agents, toxicities, side effects, and mechanisms of resistance. Chapters emphasize pharmacology and mechanisms of action at the molecular and cellular levels, followed by clinical activity and toxicity, both acute and delayed. The authors explain the rationale for use of drugs in specific schedules and combinations and offer guidelines for dose adjustment in particular situations.

This edition's introduction includes timely information on general strategies for drug usage, the science of drug discovery and development, economic and regulatory aspects of cancer drug development, and principles of pharmacokinetics. Eight new chapters have been added and more than twenty have been significantly revised.

A companion website includes the fully searchable text and an image bank.

Editorial Reviews

New England Journal of Medicine, Volume 18, Issue 355 -- "The editors have taken on the Herculean task of melding chemotherapy and biologic therapy, with an emphasis on clinical relevance. To a great degree, they have accomplished their goal. The chapters are up to date, considering the rapid changes in the field. There is extensive use of illustrations and tables, and summary tables in each chapter reinforce the central themes. The discussion of antibody therapy provides an excellent overview of the current state of functional mechanisms. This textbook will continue to be a resource for clinical oncologists, and it remains one of the essential readings for medical oncologists in training. The editors and contributors should be complimented on the results of their labors, which improve on their previous exceptional efforts." --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

3.0 out of 5 stars Kindle version has deficiencies June 7, 2011

I would love to give this Kindle title more stars. Here's what needs to be fixed

1. I cannot access the Table of Contents from either my Kindle or Kindle for Mac Application.
2. If you go to the index, topics have no corresponding links / page numbers.

Because of these deficiencies, this title is not as useful to my practice as it could be.

Publisher, please let me know when this title is updated.

3.0 out of 5 stars Lots of editing errors June 1, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I bought the kindle edition of this. I use it as a reference when I'm working and used it to study for my boards. As someone else mentioned, not having a table of contents or page numbers is annoying, but the ability to search the text is nice. However, my biggest complaint is all the spacing errors which I find incredibly distracting. Not spelling errors but spaces when there shouldn't be and lots of merged words, almost every page and sometimes 3 errors in the same paragraph. It's a very dry text and not for layman, but a good textbook for the oncology clinician. The drug charts at the beginning of each drug section are great.

5.0 out of 5 stars very detailed July 7, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This book is a great, in-depth look at chemotherapy and the pharma involved with each drug. It has a little bit of the molecular targeted therapies, but was written just as these were coming on the market. It is far to detailed for someone just looking for general information but great for practicing oncologists looking for MOAs.
