In their own words, more than 80 cancer survivors, including students, athletes, actors, teachers, moms and dads--along with their favorite medical professionals--provide a valuable, intimate briefing on the fight ahead, from diagnosis to post-recovery. In Cancer Combat you will discover advice you cannot get elsewhere, the inside story from these veterans--how they felt and what they did to survive. Find out about:

How to get what you need from your medical team
Coping with hair loss, no appetite, mouth sores
Making your hospital room a home away from home
Holding it together--work, dating, family, intimacy
Maintaining your dignity--coping at the sperm bank
Keeping your kids on track--carpooling, little league games, home-cooked meals
Bills--where to look for help and how to get it
Information, support organizations, books, and much more

Cancer Combat, a book written by and for cancer fighters, teaches patients how they can fight back and win. This is a book with real, practical advice. It is a book that provides support. It is a book with attitude. And it is a book about entering the battle of your life and coming out a winner. Cancer Combat is the first book that presents winning techniques from cancer survivors n positive, hard-hitting anecdotes. This approach forms an upbeat sense of community in which the patient, friends, and family can take comfort and from which they can gain strength and confidence, and will generate the necessary will to survive and help prepare for battle.

Here, in brief anecdotes told firsthand, are the successful tactics used by more than 90 action-oriented people to defeat cancer. These smart, tough cancer fighters offer their personal stories which are gritty, often funny, and always on the money. The anecdotes address such subjects as when to turn to your nurse instead of your doctor, how to maintain your sex life when you look and feel rotten, and how to find an ally at your insurance company. Sidebars interspersed throughout the book will feature advice, suggestions, and stores from cancer care social workers, nurses, priests, rabbis and other spiritual mentors as well as encouraging facts and light-hearted suggestions, such as great funny movies to rent during treatment.

Fighting against cancer means refusing to quit, refusing to lose, and doing anything to win. This book will help every cancer patient to throw off feelings of victimization and despair, accept reality, and then fight the battle of their lives. -->

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

For newly diagnosed cancer patients, one of the most important things to realize is the wide range of options available for fighting this disease. Unlike other consumer health titles, this work does not endorse or recommend specific doctors, treatment plans, or institutions; rather, it presents practical advice and information in the form of anecdotes from cancer survivors. Taking a specific and detailed approach to their subject, the authors, who themselves have had cancer, emphasize positive thinking and the importance of building a team of friends and family members to assist patients in their personal war. Their message is clear: patients can emerge from this disease stronger and wiser, but it takes time, organization, and optimism. Organized into four sections, chapters discuss such topics as the first diagnosis, breaking the news to others, coping with fear, and rebuilding one's life after remission. The stories collected here will inspire those readers feeling isolated and wanting to know how others handled this situation. Recommended for consumer health collections.?Janet M. More About the Author

An award-winning and best-selling author of nine non-fiction books, Dean King has chased stories across Europe, Asia, and Africa. His goal is to draw you into a rich, nuanced, and accurate historical narrative that allows you to live with the characters, to feel their pain, suffering, striving, and joy, and to grow with them. He prefers that you decide what you think about the characters' decisions and actions, rather than telling you what to think. He rides the camels, climbs the 14,000 foot passes, walks the yardarms, and tracks down far flung sources to bring you the sounds, smells, sights and insights you need. Then he writes and edits until his knuckles have no skin, his elbows ache, and his family is looking for him, all to give you pleasure in lean, melodic, and meaningful prose. In the end if he makes you desperate to take his book and hit your favorite easy chair or crawl into bed and curl up with it, he's happy. If you learn something or feel changed, then it's all the better.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Life Raft, March 27, 2000

This review is from: Cancer Combat: Cancer Survivors Share Their Guerrilla Tactics to Help You Win the Fight of Your Life (Paperback)
When my healthy body-builder 28 year old son was diagnosed with kidney cancer one day and had a nephrectomy the next, we were beyond shock. Two years later, with a good prognosis, it is still a great presence that he deals with. In looking for a support group locally (and not finding one with those near his age) I happened upon Cancer Combat and in flipping through it, found the statement that it was like having a support group in one's pocket. I bought it and could not put it down because it spoke so honestly, yet positively about the ways these victims fought back; how they faced each part of the battle and handled those battles in unique ways. I have now given the book to my son and he agreed to read it. I have also told others about the positive information that every person who is dealing with cancer...whether it be themselves or loved ones should read. This is more a thank you to all those who are a part of this wonderful book. It has helped me tremendously.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely indispensable, May 26, 2000

We bought this book for my mother right after she was diagnosed with lung cancer. She read it straight through and said it was the most comforting thing she'd encountered since her diagnosis. The real-life stories from cancer survivors are practical, humorous, and encouraging. This book has given my mom so much strength--we can't recommend it highly enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm still buying copies., July 9, 2007

This review is from: Cancer Combat: Cancer Survivors Share Their Guerrilla Tactics to Help You Win the Fight of Your Life (Paperback)
Out of the blue, I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer stage 3A in March 1998. At that time, my husband went to the bookstore and looked at every book on cancer -- back then there were a lot less books available. He brought it to the hospital, and I can't tell you how much hope it gave me; if you've been diagnosed with cancer you know that hope is sometimes all that you have. And actually, I have to say it was in one of the stories that I read about a drug that was used to alleviate nausea during chemotherapy. I asked my oncologist about the drug, he prescribed it, and it worked wonders for me.

Over the years, I have bought countless copies of this book to give to friends and friends of friends, and in fact, that's what I'm ordering now (two copies--one for a friend and one to have on hand). I had never bothered to read any of the reviews until this time and thought this might help someone decide if the book would be worthwhile to purchase.
