5.0 out of 5 stars A Life Raft
When my healthy body-builder 28 year old son was diagnosed with kidney cancer one day and had a nephrectomy the next, we were beyond shock. Two years later, with a good prognosis, it is still a great presence that he deals with. In looking for a support group locally (and not finding one with those near his age) I happened upon Cancer Combat and in flipping through it,...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not What I Thought It Would Be
I bought this book becase of the title, assuming there would be
actual "tactics" to use in helping my Mother's battle with cancer. That's not what it's about. It's more like amazing stories, and having a "go-get'em!" attitude. If you're in the mood for inspiration and pep talks this may be enjoyable reading. In my search for non-fictional...

When my healthy body-builder 28 year old son was diagnosed with kidney cancer one day and had a nephrectomy the next, we were beyond shock. Two years later, with a good prognosis, it is still a great presence that he deals with. In looking for a support group locally (and not finding one with those near his age) I happened upon Cancer Combat and in flipping through it, found the statement that it was like having a support group in one's pocket. I bought it and could not put it down because it spoke so honestly, yet positively about the ways these victims fought back; how they faced each part of the battle and handled those battles in unique ways. I have now given the book to my son and he agreed to read it. I have also told others about the positive information that every person who is dealing with cancer...whether it be themselves or loved ones should read. This is more a thank you to all those who are a part of this wonderful book. It has helped me tremendously.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely indispensable, May 26, 2000

We bought this book for my mother right after she was diagnosed with lung cancer. She read it straight through and said it was the most comforting thing she'd encountered since her diagnosis. The real-life stories from cancer survivors are practical, humorous, and encouraging. This book has given my mom so much strength--we can't recommend it highly enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm still buying copies., July 9, 2007

Out of the blue, I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer stage 3A in March 1998. At that time, my husband went to the bookstore and looked at every book on cancer -- back then there were a lot less books available. He brought it to the hospital, and I can't tell you how much hope it gave me; if you've been diagnosed with cancer you know that hope is sometimes all that you have. And actually, I have to say it was in one of the stories that I read about a drug that was used to alleviate nausea during chemotherapy. I asked my oncologist about the drug, he prescribed it, and it worked wonders for me.

Over the years, I have bought countless copies of this book to give to friends and friends of friends, and in fact, that's what I'm ordering now (two copies--one for a friend and one to have on hand). I had never bothered to read any of the reviews until this time and thought this might help someone decide if the book would be worthwhile to purchase.

This book helped me so much, I have over the months since I read it bought 4 additional copies to give to other friends facing a cancer diagnosis. It's not really a book full of tips, but it is very inspiring, and gave me a boost when I needed it.

short concise testimony after testimony of fighters on the cancer front line showing real courage and committment. survivors.

i wish J T, my first cousin who died from cancer, could have had this book. i praise the Lord that my sister, who has just survived cancer(no detectable traces now), had it.

i wish it could be available to everyone who has cancer, thinks they might get cancer, or knows someone like either.

If you're in the mood for inspiration and pep talks this may be enjoyable reading. In my search for non-fictional sources of information on fighting cancer, this book was not helpful at all. Not to be completely negative it's not a bad book to read, it's just not
what I got the impression it was going to be about.
