Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Susan Leigh, R.N., B.S.N., past president of the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship, describes the far-reaching effects that pain has on cancer patients: "Those of us who have experienced disease or treatment-related pain know that the discomfort, no matter how severe, affects not only our bodies but our minds, our souls, our relationships, our work, our play, and our dreams of the future." Written by veteran nurses with 25 years worth of expertise in caring for people and families facing cancer, this plainspoken book provides readers with general knowledge and guidelines for controlling various types of pain. For instance, to prevent constipation, a common cause of pain among patients, such things as fluid, fiber, exercise, and regular toilet routines are suggested.

Patients unable to accurately describe their pain will find questions typically asked by doctors and nurses, and suggestions on how to make caregivers better understand what is happening. Pain-management options are given for different levels of pain: mild, moderate, and severe. Family members and patients will find an evaluation and rating of medical insurance benefits as well as other sources for paying for pain treatment. In addition, the book discusses pain-management alternatives, such as acupressure/acupuncture, music therapy, imagery, and massage techniques. The authors list numerous resources for cancer pain management, including widely known ones such as the American Cancer Society, as well as several books, Internet addresses, videotapes, and audiotapes on other self-care methods to help reduce the pain and discomfort that so often affect not only the physical but the mental state of the patient. --Cate Bick
