From School Library Journal
Grade 7 Up–A comprehensive but flawed resource. The first section provides nine chapters explaining the physiology of cancer and describing the types found most commonly in teens. "Risks, Rumors, and Controversies" presents chapters on avoiding behaviors linked with the disease. Other sections describe medical tests and treatments, provide advice for coping with the many aspects of having cancer, and take a brief foray into dealing with cancer as a caregiver. Readers will find the information easy to access and helpful. The layout is clean and accessible, highlighted by shaded boxes containing facts and definitions. Unfortunately, the heading "Weird Words" is used for medical vocabulary lists, a choice that seems a bit patronizing. One also wonders at the utility of a book that tries to be both an overview of many illnesses as well as an in-depth treatment guide. While this title is ambitious, readers may find more value in consulting briefer surveys, then following up with deeper resources on each illness.–Mary R. Hofmann, Rivera Middle School, Merced, CA
