When you or a loved one get a cancer diagnosis - EVERYTHING is so overwhelming. There is so much information to process and so many decisions to make. I am an oncology nurse practitioner, and was happy to see this book come out. One of the pharmaceutical companies provides copies to patients. The very nice thing about the book is that is addresses the various side effects patients have and what foods are good to counteract them - things like nausea, diarrhea, fatigue, all have specific foods to eat. When you or a loved one get a cancer diagnosis - EVERYTHING is so overwhelming. There is so much information to process and so many decisions to make. This book is a very quick read and can help you quickly start changing your diet to one that is more healthy. It includes information on managing the side effects of cancer treatment. More than half the book is quick, easy recipes to help you get started. I highly recommend this book as your "healthy-eating starter" book. Then once you aren't so overwhelmed you can purchase a larger, more in-depth book on cancer prevention nutrition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delicious and Nutritious, September 22, 2009

I purchased this cookbook because I was recently diagnosed with a pre-cancerous condition. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that every recipe in this cookbook that I've tried so far has been delicious and very easy to prepare. The highlights tried so far: Blueberry Breakfast Cake, Banana Bran Muffins, Baked Sweet Potato Fries, Spicy Miso Peanut Noodles, Cottage-Style Mac and Cheese. Looking forward to trying Thai Chicken Soup and Cool as a Cucumber Dressing. All the recipes are chock full of anti-oxidant foods and are prepared with optimum nutrition in mind. I used to equate healthy eating with bland food, but not any more!

I've bought multiple copies of this, first for myself (spouse is a cancer patient) and then for friends who have cancer or cook for a patient. Great photos make the food look wonderful. Good recipes, good tips. My only hesitation is that you can't get all the ingredients in our small town grocery stores.
The sweet potato fries alone are worth the price of the book at the "used" price - all of mine have been less than half the marked price and only one was actually used, lightly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Cancer Patients and Families, January 8, 2012

A lot of times doctors and nurses don't have time to give you advice for what cancer patients should be eating while getting treatment. This book really helps with all those questions you wish you would have asked when you were there with the nurse. There's even a 24-hour cancer hotline phone number provided in the front of the book! And it is written by registered dietitions who have experience with cancer patients. A great resource!

This is very helpful, and good advice. The book has many colorful recipes that are not just for cancer patients - they are colorful and nutritious, but somebody other than the patient would have to shop for the ingredients, and make them. The ingredients are not what most people have in the house, and most of the recipes are labor intensive. I know my patients would not be making spring rolls in a bamboo steamer, or appetizers with various unusual spices. Nice, but not practical. So the book is a mixture of practical advice, but complex recipes. I know a dietician authored the book, so definitely the recipes are healthy, but you'd almost have to own a restaurant to make most of them. That's why my review is mixed. My patients have found the advice, but not the recipes, helpful

this book offers healthy dishes for cancer patients. The helpful information on the value of the certain foods for specific ailments offers comfort when preparing for a cancer patient. I can't help noticing that these well-balanced offerings can be good for anyone, especially if gaining or losing weight is an objective. So I'm pleased to have this cookbook to help out my friend, and it may benefit my chubby self as well.
