Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

While amazing advances have been made in cancer diagnoses and treatment, the management of cancer-related pain remains elusive for many who are afflicted with the disease. However, as the author points out, good, effective treatment for pain is available but is not as widely available as it should be. Cicala, director of the Methodist Comprehensive Pain Institute in Memphis, brings his knowledge and experience of managing pain together with that of four of his colleagues to create an informative, accessible work on treating and handling cancer pain. The causes of pain and the factors that worsen it are covered in the first part of the book, but those with an acute need for pain relief information can jump to the second section of the book, which details standard cancer pain treatments. Several helpful appendixes follow the third section, which delves into advanced pain treatment. All but the smallest consumer health collections should have a current work on cancer pain management, and this is recommended to fill that slot. Valeria Long, Grand Valley State Univ.
