Book Description

March 24, 2006
The Cancer Survivor's Guide is the first book to offer a proven step-by-step healthcare program for life after cancer. Dr. Feuerstein knows firsthand what life after cancer truly means and his 7-step self-management system is a result of personal experience as well as extensive research, resulting in a program that's rooted in very pragmatic sensibility coupled with a sense of "realistic optimism." As medical understanding of cancer improves, more people are surviving this frightening disease; yet survivors face many challenges long after their treatments have ended. They must strike a delicate balance between maintaining a positive attitude and being realistic about their health. This revolutionary program drastically improves the length and quality of life for cancer survivors, helping them to manage the variety of physical, emotional, and spiritual issues they face. Cancer survivors can learn how to evaluate their condition, assess their relationships with healthcare providers, research their illness and treatment options, handle finances, seek alternative therapies when necessary, improve overall health habits, tend to their emotional well-being, and continue to monitor the long-term success of their survivorship program. This book offers hope—and a game plan—for cancer patients and their loved ones as they look forward to the life ahead.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Praise for The Cancer Survivor’s Guide:
"This book is a true learning vehicle on cancer survivorship: it provides step by step measures to mitigate the negatives and provides valuable lessons on how to regain and sustain hope for the future. As a long term and proactive cancer survivor, reading this compelling book gave me pause to think about so many new approaches that I can use in my own survivorship journey." —Neal P. Levitan, Executive Director, Brain Tumor Society
"The Cancer Survivor's Guide provides a unique perspective on strategies for managing the complex and challenging tasks confronting persons diagnosed with cancer. As professionals with expertise in the health-care system, Drs. Feuerstein and Findley take survivors through a step-by-step program that is practical and easy to follow. After reading this book, patients and their families will learn to better navigate the health-care system, manage the stress of diagnosis and treatment, improve their health status and approaches to communicating with their doctors and other support networks, and strategies for achieving a more fulfilling and productive life both during and after their medical treatment has been completed." —Lawrence J. Siegel, Ph.D., ABPP, Dean and Professor, Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Yeshiva University
"In The Cancer Survivor’s Guide, noted health professionals Drs. Michael Feuerstein and Patricia Findley offer a personal and professional prescription for taking control of your life in the face of cancer. This down-to-earth book offers practical how-to advice and inspirational true-life stories to help patients and their families achieve the best possible quality of life." —Wendy Nelson, PhD, The National Cancer Institute
"The Cancer Survivor's Guide resonates through its authenticity, focus, timeliness, and relevance. While cancer occupies a special immediacy among life’s wake-up calls, much in this book sheds light throughout the landscape of chronic disease. Dr. Feuerstein and Dr. Findley provide genuine assistance to both patients and healthcare professionals." —Sam Moon, MD, MPH, Chief of the Division of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Duke University
"The Cancer Survivor’s Guide is a wonderful resource for people with cancer. Patients will find the action plans and other tools extremely helpful in their quest for better health care and improvement in the quality of their lives." —Julia Faucett, PhD, RN, professor and chair of the department of community health systems at the University of California in San Francisco
"The Cancer Survivor’s Guide is forthright, clear, and simple: it provides superb rules for coping with everything from the practical issues of navigating the health care system to how to deal with those demons representing fears of recurrence. I highly recommend this book to cancer survivors and their families." —Jimmie C. Holland, MD, Wayne E. Chapman Chair in Psychiatric Oncology, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center
"This inspirational, best of its kind, cutting-edge book provides a roadmap to a healthier and meaningful future following a cancer diagnosis. This enormously helpful guide provides a wealth of life-saving information and tools, providing practical steps that can be taken to ensure the best medical care, to build a strong support team, and to create optimism and hope." —Susan J. Blumenthal, MD, MPA, Former U.S. Assistant Surgeon General, Clinical Professor, Georgetown and Tufts Schools of Medicine
"As a father of a child who survived cancer, the indignity of an oncologist having to deal with cancer in my family was how I became aware of survivorship. My experience taught me the importance of comprehensive care of the patient. Drs. Feuerstein and Findley guide the survivor through many of the challenges they face, providing clear information and useful tools to not only maximize the collaboration between patient and physician but to help survivors better manage many of these challenges—which is crucial to successful survivorship." —Steven N. Wolff, M.D., Chairman, Scientific Advisory Committee, Lance Armstrong Foundation

5.0 out of 5 stars Useful tool for Survivors and Clinicians, October 29, 2006
By
This review is from: The Cancer Survivor's Guide: The Essential Handbook to Life after Cancer (Paperback)
This book, co-authored by a cancer survivor, is an extremely useful tool to help guide survivors (or clinicians working with survivors) through the months and years following a cancer diagnosis. I have used this book as the guideline for a cancer survivorship therapy group and it has been received very well by the group members. One survivor stated that this book "provids the how-to steps" for moving on after cancer. Step-by-step, practical tips make this book a welcome addition to the body of cancer surivorship work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide for healthy living following cancer, August 18, 2010
This book provides a great contribution. It's patient friendly and does a really good job of explaining therapeutic concepts in plain language. I also liked flexible approach of having a menu of things for people to choose from that they can try or leave off. I think it makes the concepts more approachable. The book takes a holistic approach, attending to practical, logistical, medical, psychological, and behavioral factors in survivorship.
