Dr. Gerson practiced in the US after coming from Germany during WWII. He was told they treat, not cure, in this country. He had terrible headaches which lead to a high potassium diet approach which started helping turberculosis and cancer patients. This evolved into more and more natural foods high in veggies, devoid of salt, fats and animal protein. His approach has all the things they have been finding as anti-cancer- carrot/apple juice, green juice from lettuce and tops from beets, special soup with potatoes, onions, leeks, celery and parsley root, garlic, tomatoes, slow cooked for 3 hours. The primary focus of it all is strengthening the liver, and also starving and dissolving the cancer. There are hourly juices. The potassium supplement was a result of 100 experiments to get a combination of 4 different potassium compounds, that would go into cells and displace sodium. Cancer in general has a fermentation metabolism that loves sodium and needs little oxygen. The therapy gets blood and potassium in there, as well as the carotenoids and other things that stop the cancer or slow it down. Another key factor is the juices must be very fresh, to not destroy the oxidizing enzymes (your body also oxidizes germs with hydrogen peroxide mfg by immune cells); in fact intravenous hyd peroxide is very effective with cancer supposedly, as well as emphyesema- provides oxygen to cells. Also a juice press is needed, not centrifugal, which strips off the charge on the juice, making it ineffective at getting into the cells. Gerson also talks about studies that measured the electrical potential of organs and how they diminished with poisons. This is still an unexplored area I think. Dr. Albert Schweitzer called Gerson an eminent genius, as he renewed Schweitzer's life who went on to do his best work. The book has 50 cases documented cures. Gerson also took some of his cases before Senator Claude Pepper's commitee in the 50s and was narrowly voted down for the gov't to sponsor research in his methods. Morris Fishbein of the AMA harassed Gerson many years, and Fishbein was forced to retract his slanderous article against Gerson in the AMA Journal. Gerson treated John Gunther in Death Be Not Proud, and he got much better, but other doctors decided to try reverse hormones on him as that was the latest thing, and it worked for a short time, then the cancer came back wildly and he died.
THe book is old, 50s,in fact he had to rewrite it after someone broke into his house and stole his manuscripts. Bizarre. Anyway there is a lot of good info in the book. It will not cure all cancers. And there is more to cancer than diet. It requires other life changes. This treatment is a challenge, and may not be suitable for some that cannot handle the low protein initially ("pot" cheese is added later). I think you still need to adjust it to the individual. But the book is surprisingly prophetic on what will happen with poor diets, poor soil, etc. We are seeing it today. It is worth the money, cancer or not.
Gerson.org has other books/videos about people that have used the diet and are cured, including a woman M.D. I am not affiliated with the Gerson Institute, just interested in natural remedies.

Read this book (and the Gerson Therapy) if you want to heal yourself actively. This book will help you become an active participant in your own healing, that means more control over your life, and disease. Our bodies can fight cancer if we help our immune system, and detoxify our bodies.
My mother was diagnosed with cancer of the soft tissue (low back area), and Non-hodgkin's lymphoma 2 years ago. She didnt seek medical advice thinking it was just low back pain until the pain became unbearable. The cancer has already spread to her bones and other parts of her low back compressing her kidney, and blood vessels and nerves to her leg. She started doing chemotherapy but whe is too weak to handle it all. It made her very sick, and she felt that the chemo will kill her before the cancer does so she decided not to finish the chemo program. She searched for an alternative and found Gerson therapy.
My mom is alive and well. In fact she is back doing her business and practicing her profession. Her MRI showed that her cancer had shrunk and stopped growing. She's gained weight, and got her life back.
Another lady was diagnosed with Non-hodgkins lymphoma about the same time my mother was diagnosed, that lady had expired after just a few months (she didnt know about Gerson's therapy).
I'm so happy that my mom is alive! She is commited to doing the Gerson Therapy which saved her life.
I'm sorry if I talked more about my mother that the book. This is because she is living proof that Gerson Therapy really works.
This book is a must read if you want to cure yourself or a loved one.

If you do, READ THIS BOOK! A friend of mine who hasfibromyalgia introduced me to Dr. Gerson's book. I also havefibromyalgia. Ten months ago, I thought I was going to die. I was sosick that I couldn't work, I could barely take care of myself and Ihad to give away most of my possessions to move half way across thecountry to stay with family. I In mid 1998 I was diagonised with prostate cancer and after much research decided to start with the Gerson therapy. I began at a hosipatal that applied the therapy and followed the advise of the doctor throuout the prpgram I did not use any conventional or mainstream treatments.

In 6 months the tumor began to shrink and was gone in about 1 1/2 years. I stayed on the program for a total of 3 years and now follow a maintenance program. It is important to do the complete program and not do just part of it as imbalances could occur.

Dr. Gerson's book is a must-read for anyone with cancer (particularly if you've been given a "hopeless" prognosis). It proves once and for all that there IS and HAS BEEN a cure for cancer in America for many, many years.

Yes, a very interesting book. And I amazed, Dr Gerson wrote it many years ago, and he could see clearly many problems that we are facing right now: soil content, environment and water pollution, too much sodium and processed food....the clue is, whether you have cancer or not: EAT HEALTHY! EAT RIGHT!!
I recommend this book; I don't agree 100% with everything he said, but still is a very good book.

Well, many things saved my life... But this book was most instrumental. When nothing else seemed to help, following the recipes and guide with care did the trick.

I still love Hippocrates soup - I even blogged my modern recipe version for all to use. Hippocrates used this soup for his patients. Something about the miracle of leeks, potatoes, tomatoes, onions, and celery root all together.

Gerson goes into detail about how cancer patients react adversely to foods encased in plastic.

In those days, perhaps the plastic was worse then than it is today. But whether a person survived or didn't during treatment depended upon their food exposure to plastic.

He also eliminated salt and increased potassium intake. I love salt. But every time I have it, I wonder... should I not use this stuff?

I use the unheated rock salt from Utah. Just a little.

Whenever I'm sick, or even whenever my dog or cat is sick, I make Hippocrates Soup and Smoosh. (Instead of full juicing which is alot of work). And yes, they do get better. We get better.

This is, of course, my own personal experience.

So let me just say, this book is one of the best ever in the whole world. : )

There are more modern adaptations, but this is the original that I always turn to.

Max Gerson was a miracle worker, and even the great Dr. Albert Schweitzer loved him and what he accomplished.

Buy this book... it may change your life like it did mine.

This book is Dr. Gerson's great work, written just before he died by cynide poisoning. When he died he was working on his second book which would have been the "results of one hundred (100) cases in the cure of advanced cancer". I used this book religiously, reading it from cover to cover when my husband had cancer. We did the juicing until he could no longer swallow, but the juicing combined with the coffee enemas made a difference in my husband's quality of life. The first coffee enema he did rejuvenated him incredibly and helped alleviate pain. It all comes down to good food and diet. If you want to understand the nature on how to cure "incurable dieases" then read this definately. Moderate medicine did not and would not help me. The first week of doing the diet therapy some symptoms that I've had for years all of a sudden started to dissappear. The doctors could not tell me whats happening to me but that I should stop it immediately. If you don't have the money to do the whole therapy at least by the book and read it. You could be saving your life if not someone else's.
