4.0 out of 5 stars Ten years after..., September 8, 2006

This review is from: Canciones 96-06 (Bonus CD) (Bonus Dvd) (Arg) (Audio CD)
This album has been released trying to commemorate the first 10 years of the artist as solo performer since the disintegration of `Heroes del Silencio'. Two editions were made, a single and commercial-friendly edition of a single disc with the most known hits, and the double CD plus DVD edition I am to talk about. The last one, besides being more comprehensive, has been personally reviewed by Enrique Bunbury, who selected the tracks and videos to include.

The Albums

The two CD's contain many of the most representative songs of his solo career, though only one song from his debut album is included (Salome) which comes as no surprise as Bunbury himself has said it is his least favorite album. Also, considering this is supposed to be the comprehensive anthology, it comes as a surprise that only three of his alternate projects are featured.

"Bushido" is present with three tracks: `Sex food' (not a favorite of mine),' L'amour' (extracted from the `Freak Show') and an incredible live version of `Desmejorado' (to me, the double album is worth because of this song)

The box of "Los Maxis" had many great songs and rarities that I feel could have been included, instead of that, only one song made it (El viento a favor, opcion Barcelona) which in my case disappointed me. The song almost at the end has many noises and skips recorded in it. I went to the store and tried to have it changed but it seems all the copies that made it there had the same recording error.

"Que te vaya bonito", also known as tribute to Mexico, is also included and a studio version of `Aunque no sea conmigo' is finally available. Enrique performed this song many times on his live concerts and even included it in the DVD release of `Una cita en flamingos'. Well, a studio version with a nice sound quality is now available here.

Other projects, like `Panero', `Tatuaje' or all the participations he has recorded with other artists (such as Elefantes, Pereza, Quique Gonzalez and many others) are not included. For fans that would have been great as many of the songs that actually made it to the album were already in our collection.

Overall, a good selection of tracks that I believe could have been more comprehensive than what it actually is. The recording error in `Viento a favor' was something I did not enjoy at all.

The DVD

The videos are a total letdown. But the interview with Enrique en Cuba proofs to be reason enough to buy this edition. First of all, there are many videos missing in this DVD, `Pequeno' for instance, had three alternate versions recorded and only one was included (the Oasis version included previously in the `Pequeno Cabart Ambulante' DVD)

And that is, I guess, the main flaw of the DVD, most of the songs are extracted from the previous DVD releases, both `Una cita en Flamingos' and `Freak Show'. There is little video material unreleased before and the quality with which the transfer was made was not best. I tried looking at this in my HDTV and the image looked awfully pixel-distorted.

The highlight of the DVD, and I will not deny that, is the interview in Cuba. It is quite interesting to see a retrospective of his albums in his own words, many facts are brought up here (such as the fact that the partnership in Bushido ended in not so nice terms) that make this document a must for fans of Enrique. So if you always wondered what his opinion was on his albums, here you will surely find that, among other interesting information.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential!, March 23, 2006
This review is from: Canciones 96-06 (Audio CD)
Bunbury has always been a favorite latin artist of mine over the years. He's kept it real. I believe his work does stand the test of time and he will be remembered with respect later on. He'll fall into the line of great male latin singers such as Raphael, Sandro, and dare I say even Jose Jose.
This is a tight compilation where you can enjoy the best of the best of his solo work. There have been a couple of split greatest hits compilations released but THIS IS IT! You can't go wrong with this one.
Listen and appreciate what Bunbury has to offer because in my opinion it is good. Deep lyrics, good melodies, interesting musical ideas....I mean how can you go wrong?
QUE VIVA BUNBURY!
