Having recorded more than three hundred songs and some fifty lp's, this disc features nineteen songs from his movies as the (Spanish) title indicates. Naturally his arguably most well known song, "Sombras" is featured as are some of his other more known titles like "Entrega Total which has his signature grito smoothed out by a voice that will send chills up and down your spine," "El Pecador," the Jose Alfredo Jimenez compositions, "Ameneci en Tus Brazos", "Retirada" and " El Camino de las Noches." Other great songs include the classic love song and often recorded( The Ventures, Perez Prado, Los Rabanes etc.) in many different styles "Perfidia," "the absolutely romantic song "Si Dios Me Quita La Vida"(If God Takes My Life) that professes a love so great that if he leaves this Earth first he promises to send an angel to guard over the other left behind and states that if she finds calor (fire) in anothers arms than he he would die again in heaven! These are great songs in the Bolero Ranchero style first made popular in the late forties with the Pedro Infante(Solis imitated Infante early on in his career) song "Coracito Corazon." This style is partially mariachi driven in a toned down soft tempo with subdued horns and more emphasis on the strings and guitars. It is romantic music that is distinctly Mexican but popular and reinterpreted in many Latin American countries and elsewhere. On this disc the studio recordings are top notch. This is a great collection of songs with some that are not included on other discs; this is a nice addition for the completist or someone just exploring the inolvidable(unforgetable) voice of Javier Solis. Although his presence was in some thirty plus movies he never achieved the same echelon of stardom in Mexico has other charros cantores(singing cowboys) like Pedro Infante or Jorge Negrete. His premature death at age 34 may have helped contribute to this but it also elevated him posthumously as one of Mexico's greatest singing idolos(idols). Sony has done more than a decent job of honoring Solis and the music from his movies by including an informative(in Spanish only) four page booklet with many pictures too. The middle spread featues a roll of film with eleven "stills" and the titles of some his more notable films alongside other greats from La Epoca de Oro del Cine Mexicano(The Golden Age of Mexican Cinema). Suposedly this is a limited edition 35th anniversary release. If you have never heard Javier Solis this might be a good place to start; once you hear his sensual, tender yet masculine voice that can only be compared to silk or velvet, you will want to hear more of his interpretations, after all, he is El Rey del Bolero Ranchero. Great stuff that is even better if you have someone to share it with:)
