4.0 out of 5 stars Good, solid rock
On her new release, Patti's voice has only the tiniest bit of a "stuffy nose" quality that was shown on her previous hit song, "Inside". It and sounds more mature. She also rocks out much more than I expected. Especially on track "Moonage Daydream".

2.0 out of 5 stars A Real Disappointment
As far as I'm aware this album did not go on general release in Europe, so when I found it as a US import I jumped at the chance to buy it, as Between The 1 And The 9 is one of my top three albums of all time (one of those which you can listen to over and over and over and over and never grow tired of...).
Although music critics generally seem enthusiastic about...

Though I wouldn't really compare Rothberg's music to anyone else's, I'd say that those who like aggressive girl rock in the vein of Liz Phair will like this a lot. This is a CD best played LOUD!

5.0 out of 5 stars Killer Sophomore Album, March 3, 2003
This review is from: Candelabra Cadabra (Audio CD)
While her debut album was incredible, in some ways, Candelabra Cadabra tops it. It's a ballsy collection mixing genres from rock to pop to a little bit of folk. Rothberg truly knows how to put clever memorable lyrics to hooky music, and she really hits the ball out of the park on quite a few tracks here -- primarily the rock-operaish title track, the Kirsty Maccoll-ish closer "Wry It Girl", the hilarious rocker "Dish It Out" and the can't-get-it-out-of-my-head "Eggshells". Excellent guitar rock (and terrifically produced) from one of the best musicians you're probably not listening to (yet). Pick it up.

I brought my fiancee from Austin to Washington DC on the bus; and this CD was one of the CD's we listened to. It was around midnight, and that's what made this CD addictive (BTW, I ordered this from her official website). It has a fuller sound than 'Between' and is much more experimental, with longer songs, which is a good thing. Another favorite. Patti Rothberg is "That Damn Good!"

5.0 out of 5 stars And Now, for Something Completely Different..., October 12, 2004
This review is from: Candelabra Cadabra (Audio CD)
Granted, this album takes a much different approach than the priorly released BETWEEN THE 1 & THE 9, but that doesn't detract from the obvious power of Rothburg's musicality. If anything, the fact that she can put out a record with a completely different sound and attitude speaks highly of her as an artist.
Upon first listening to this, I expected the cool vibe and meaning derived from BETWEEN, but I got something totally different. This album is awesome in that it explores many different genres and isn't afraid to use a sitar! With elements of punk, satire, pop, and rock, there is enough variety to allow enjoyment for all listeners. The one prevalent thing is Rothburg's wit. Personal favorites include "Shadows of Me," "You Killed My Time," (which spots an awesome rock-guitar solo), the satiric "Wry It Girl," and a cover of David Bowie's "Moonage Daydream."
You might not like the album the first time around, but the more you listen, the more intricate it becomes. Check it out before pre-judging! It's not the same as BETWEEN, but it's not supposed to be.

5.0 out of 5 stars A keeper!, August 15, 2006

I don't have the music expertise or vocabulary to wax eloquent about this album, but I know what I like, and I like this; it's a keeper! The others have made the positive comments I would if I could.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sophomore effort an artistic triumph!!, February 28, 2006

This review is from: Candelabra Cadabra (Audio CD)
Patti Rothberg released an earlier record entitled "Between The One And The Nine", an excellent example of a mid 90's female guitar slinger of the Lilith Fair generation. This record is even better, but very different, and much harder to classify. It's still within the pop / rock realm, but the instrumentation is more dense, complex and varied. Patti contributed vocals, guitar, percussion and synth (not to mention the cover artwork), there are other keyboards and strings, and some sitar highlights. The songs remain melodic but many are darker, heavier and much more psychedelic than anything on "Between..." and further from Lilith's singer/songwriter oeuvre. The subject matter ranges well beyond her home territory of urban romance and rebellion; and there's often a longing, almost melancholy beauty to the lyrics and the sound. If Patti continues with this innovative type of artistic output it won't be long before she becomes the Kate Bush of her generation. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Not quite the classic that "Between the 1 and the 9" is, but still a first class album and one that continues to grow on you. I'm eagerly awaiting Patti's next. Btw, this CD can be purchased from Patti's website for $16.50 - http://www.bignoisenow.com/rothbergcds.html.

1.0 out of 5 stars I am SO sad about this cd, August 28, 2004
This review is from: Candelabra Cadabra (Audio CD)
I have waited for a long time to hear a new release from Patti Rothberg. This cd is horrible, way overproduced. There is truly not one song on the cd that I like.

2.0 out of 5 stars A Real Disappointment, September 16, 2002

As far as I'm aware this album did not go on general release in Europe, so when I found it as a US import I jumped at the chance to buy it, as Between The 1 And The 9 is one of my top three albums of all time (one of those which you can listen to over and over and over and over and never grow tired of...).
Although music critics generally seem enthusiastic about Rothberg's new album, suggesting that she shows a more mature approach, I have to say I was really disappointed. It might well be more complex, but the sound was rough and harsh, while the lyrics were almost indistinguishable - and those that weren't, were distinctly uninspiring.
I'm sure this album will win her a lot of new fans, but I advise old fans who buy Candelebra Cadabra that this album takes you on a completely different trip - and not one that I personally enjoyed.
A real let down after Between The 1 And The 9.
