This is one of my favorite discs at Christmas time. It is at once peaceful and calm, yet joyous and expectant. There are the usual brass and organ carols, but also stunning arrangements and performances of lesser-known things. Prime among these are the setting of "Away in a Manger" that makes me want to pull off the highway and listen just to that song without distractions, and the pulsing, exciting "What Strangers are These", which I have never heard anywhere else. Chorally, the disc is a little unsatisfying because of balance issues with the rest of the disc--some songs are loud, others very soft, so it makes it hard to listen to without having to adjust the volume periodically. However, I still wouldn't trade it for all the Messiahs in the world!

I have been listening to this choir since 1982. I wore out the original tape, in the days before CD's. I have been to the actual performance, a week before Christmas three times and am going back this year 2005.

The performance is so delicate, yet so powerful that it is emotional and moving, regardless of your orientation. Imagine this performance, in the manificent HH Richardson-designed Trinity Church, Copley Square, Boston. People wait for hours to get in. The lights go out, the Choir, brass timpani and organ just work so well together. One by one, candles are lit, and the huge church comes alive. The choir processes down the asiles singing in strength and everyone joins in.

It is a spiritual experience even if you are not religious. The strength of the performance invites you to participate. I find myself singing louder than I do anywhere else.

After my first child was born, I held her in my arms, and "Candlelight Carol" became my anthem:

How do you capture

The wind on the water?

How do you count all the stars in the sky?

How can you measure

The love of a mother

Or how can you write down

A baby's first cry?

I am not a musician and to my ear, the Chorus is professional. The tunes are classic, but they bring a new life to familiar tunes.

If you've been feeling stressed out, this is the perfect time to calm the nerves, focus on meaning and purpose, and let you enjoy yourself for a few minutes.

If you can't attend, do the next best thing, get the CD, turn it up till you hear the bass of the organ rumble your rafters and sing your heart out.

Enjoy!

Yeah, I'm old school - I still call them albums. I'm one of those people that listens to Christmas music year-round. (I know - my kids hate it, and I usually listen with headphones outside the holiday season so I don't offend.) Anyway, I'm fairly pleased with this CD. There are some old, well-loved favorites (O Holy Night and I Wonder As I Wander), and some selections that I'm not as familiar with. One thing I don't appreciate it is the difference in sound levels. One song is fine to play at a normal volume setting, and on the next one, I have to crank up the volume as loud as it will go in the car, on the computer, on the CD player in the house. That's a pain. If they ever re-release it with better sound quality, I would probably buy it again to get the the selection of pieces.

Excellent songs - bad sound. Some songs are very soft and some are just soft. When listening, I have to contantly turn the volume up and down. I would not recommend this.

My favorite Christmas CD!!! I listen to it every year. The recording by one of America's best church choirs features a carefully selected mix of some of the best loved carols of the season sung with impeccable diction, tuning, and blend in a superb acoustical setting. The magnificent Aeolian Skinner organ under the hands of Ross Wood and brass provide the perfect underpinning to make this CD a must have for everyone.

Beautiful, beautiful carols and performance (just not engineered well as others have stated); I ripped the CD and did a little volume-boosting on the quiet cuts, and am much happier listening to it now.
I've given this CD as a gift and always been complimented on the choice; if you can look past the one technical issue, this album will be a favorite --

Duh! I just re-discovered my beloved Trinity Church Candlelight Carols cassette in with our Christmas decorations but I can't play it because we no longer have a cassette player of any sort. Bummer! Cannot celebrate and enjoy Christmas without this recording. It's THAT good! Not as good as "the real deal". If you're ever in Boston a couple of weekends before Christmas you MUST attend The Trinity Church Candlelight Services. Guaranteed to be the BEST Christmas service you will ever have the good fortune of enjoying. We missed it this year because we're down with the flu but we'll certainly brave the elements next year to get in. It is the one time of the year that I get to "be" with my long-deceased mother when she comes to me during the service. Gets me crying like a baby every time. And you're thinking "What's that guy smoking?" ;-)

My review is two-fold. One, I would give five stars for the music, but my actual review is on the product (CD). Some of the recordings sound good while others are barely audible. Sometimes the voices sound drowned out while the music is fairly loud. Whoever mixed this CD in the studio did a very uneven job. I did what another reviewer wrote. I went into iTunes and adjusted the sounds with the equalizer. For some, they do not have that option as they will listen to the CD through a CD player. Again, the music is A+, but the sound recording is uneven, hence the three-star. If you like John Rutter's style of choral Christmas music, I highly recommend this, with a caveat of course. I hope this helps.
